silly saturday

silly saturday at the whimsey project.  our day to share silly stuff to make us grin, giggle, guffaw!

in the spirit of the season, my silly is an extreme christmas prank i saw on the travel channel. a dude somewhere left for work. as soon as he did his friends swooped into his apartment and wrapped EVERYTHING; including the individual food items in the refrigerator and all the stuff in drawers! it took a team of six friends all day to wrap the apartment. they used 80 rolls of wrapping paper and 25 rolls of tape.  when the dude returned home they were waiting for him to see his reaction. he was gobsmacked, to say the least!

solitude sunday

solitude sunday at the whimsey project. our day to spend time with a book; especially those that have been waiting to be read for a long time.

treasures from the attic: the extraordinary story of anne frank's family by mirjam pressler.  after the war the frank family attempted to regroup.  they learned that edith, margot and anne have died in a concentration camp.  otto survived.  anne's diary became a book, thanks to the hard work of her father, otto.  the book was translated into many, many languages. then there was a play and a movie. most of all there was the anne frank foundation dedicated to promoting peace.  as difficult as it was for the entire family, they supported and were involved in the foundation. as time passed, the older generation died, leaving the anne frank legacy to the younger generation of the frank family.  buddy, anne's favorite cousin, and his wife, gerti, has carried on the foundation and work that the diary sparked in her father.  a very sad book to read but enlightening.  after reading anne frank's diary and how it ended, one has had to wonder about the rest of the family.  now we know.

silly saturday at the whimsey project! our day to share silly stuff to make us grin, giggle, guffaw!

i looked out the window to find the birds agitated; flying all around, back and forth between the trees, chattering angrily!  a closer look revealed one of the cats was asleep in the tray bird feeder!  the birds wanted kitty to wake up and go away so they could enjoy a nibble or two!  the scene made me giggle. silly birds.  silly kitty.

having completed the massive american art history book, today i begin treasures from the attic, the extraordinary story of anne frank's family by mirjam pressler. the publisher's note, that begins the book, indicates that, in 2001, thousands of personal family papers and photographs were found in the attic of anne's cousin, buddy elias.  he and his wife, gertie, organized the documents into a family history. this family history is the basis of treasures from the attic.  thus far, throughout the narrative that i read this morning, the actual texts and photos of the collection are offered.

solitude sunday at the whimsey project.  our day to spend time with a book; especially those that have been sitting on the shelf waiting to be read.

american vision: the epic history of art in america by robert hughes has been completed! the final discussion was about the art of the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. this means andy warhol and other moderists. the art of the times were in the schools of abstract expressionism, abstract, performance, minimalism, earth art and constructivism.  during the 1980s, art became a commodity that the world had never before experienced.  pieces were selling for millions and millions of dollars, which profoundly changed the way art was acquired.  and now, it's time to begin another book!

jacob had an unusual experience while walking in the woods thanksgiving weekend. it was very wet and muddy from the snow so walking conditions were tricky in places.  he found himself in one such place having stepped, then sank, into the boggy mud up to his thighs! he got himself freed from the suction of the mud only to leave his boot three feet under. he returned to the house cold, wet, muddy, and half barefoot!  after we got over the initial shock of his appearance and the situation, we all had a good laugh.  he had a hot shower.

there's more history read than awaits for robert hughes' american visions: the epic history of art in america because i have made it from the 1930s to the 1950s. during the great depression the federal government funded programs to keep artists working, just as there were programs to keep construction workers working. design as art of structures, transportation systems and daily items came to the fore after world war two.  abstract art rose to prominence during the 1950s, featuring such artists as jackson pollack, john graham and willem de kooning. arshile gorky was considered to be the best of the abstract artists.

my journey through, robert hughes' american visions: the epic history of art in  america, continues. i'm definitely making progress with this very thick book as i'm actually really about the 20th century.
a few tidbits i've learned:
*the 1925 exposition des arts decoratifs in paris brought forth the last universal decorating style. know everywhere as art deco.
*hugh ferriss was a trained architect however spent most of his career rendering the designs of other architects.  his drawings of proposed buildings were, themselves, works of art.
*polar opposites in style and sensibility, the painters edward hopper and jackson pollock were the most original american painters.

solitude sunday at the whimsey project. our day to spend time with a book.  any book will do, however, pay attention to those books that have been resting on the shelves for a long time waiting for you!

american visions: the epic history of art in america by robert hughes continues for me.  it appears that i have read about one half of the volume; having read about the late 1800s this morning.  the artists who caught my attention from this time of the gilded age was william harnett and john fredrick peto. amid all the over abundance of the first wave of machine made products, harnett and peto painted retrospectives that contain very few items, all of them relevant to the past and meaningful in political or social aspects.  the form the paintings take is that of a bulletin board or letter rack or wall. the paintings are so realistic it's difficult to accept they works aren't bulletin boards or letter racks or walls.

solitude sunday

solitude sunday at the whimsey project.  our day to spend time with a book.

today's reading session of robert hughes' american visions: the epic history of art in america, featured impressionistic art.  begun in paris, the impressionist movement was reviled by the french but beloved in america.  most of the paris originated art, therefore, made its way to america; allowing america to become the largest collector of the impressionist movement.  several american artists joined the impressionist movement and they were truly celebrated at home and, eventually, abroad. interestingly, tiffany, of stained glass fame, was named louis comfort.  that intrigues on several levels.

whimsical wednesday

it's diy day for whimsical wednesday! do something, anything that would be a do-it-yourself project. bake or cook something from scratch without the aid of a convenience product like a boxed cake mix. make something for the house like homemade household cleaner.  fix a leaky faucet.  make suet cakes for the birds. do-it-yourself anything this whimsical wednesday.

when i was a child i liked the dot-to-dot pages in the activity books. i liked doing them myself or side-by-side with my sister or a friend.  when my children were young we did dot-to-dot pages as well.  now, with grandchildren, i have searched for dot-to-dot color pages and have come up empty. for diy day this whimsical wednesday, i will be making homemade dot-to-dot color pages.

sunday morning i looked out a south facing window in my house.  what can be seen, typically, is sky and a line of huge trees.  that's what i saw when suddenly i saw a hot air balloon slowly rise about the trees. expecting it to travel, i was surprised to see it slowly descend below the tree line.  in a while it happened again! a hot air balloon going up above the tree line and back down again. i imagined it was on a slow going trampoline or pogo stick!  then i remembered it was fall festival weekend in town and people could take lift in a tethered hot air balloon. NOT SOMETHING YOU SEE EVERY DAY!

solitude sunday

solitude sunday at the whimsey project.  our day to spend time with a book. any book will do, however, perhaps focus on those long waiting-to-be-read books resting on your bookshelves.

the period of the influence of japanese art and culture on american art was the focus of my reading of robert hughes', american visions, the epic history of art in america.  after commodore matthew perry arrived in japan in 1854, the world of japan opened to america and europe. the first american artist of note to be influenced by japanese art was james a.m. whistler of "whistler's mother" fame.

silly saturday at the whimsey project! our day to share funnies that make each other grin, giggle and guffaw!  jokes, funny experiences, thoughts that provoke laughter.  bring it on!

for a few years now, my grandchildren have had bucket lists; even though they are only 11 and 13.   while they were visiting last week, jacob announced that when he was 20 he wanted to smack megan with a fish.  why, no one knows, including jacob. however, it's on his bucket list.  he fished a lot over the weekend, mostly by himself. at one point megan was on the dock with him when he caught a fish. she got smacked.  he didn't have to wait nine more years to cross that off his bucket list!!!!  megan instantly treated jacob to a swim as she pushed him in the lake after he whacked her with a fish.

solitude sunday at the whimsey project.  our day to spend time with a book.

my journey through robert hughes' american visions, an epic history of art in america, continues.  i am now reading about the american renaissance; a period in which art is no longer influenced by the puritan ethic.and a period of time in which america became dedicated to having american art be just as good or better than what is (and has been) created in europe.

silly saturday

it's silly saturday at the whimsey project! our day to share grins, giggles and guffaws through all things funny.  share your jokes, absurdities and other fun stuff!

one of the only jokes i know:

a truck broke down on the highway.  a guy stopped to help.  the truck driver asked the guy, "my truck has broken down.  i have a shipment of penguins in the truck that need to go to the zoo.  would you take them for me?"  the guy was glad to help.  the driver gave the guy money for his trouble and the penguins were moved to the other truck and away they went.

later, while awaiting his truck's repair, the driver was having a bite to eat at a diner.  he looks out the window to see the guy and the penguins walking down the street!  shocked he ran outside and asked, "what are you doing? i thought i asked you to take the penguins to the zoo!"  the guy replied, "i did take the penguins to the zoo!  there was enough money left over so now we are going to the movies!"

now, you make us laugh on silly saturday!

whimsical wednesday

it's learn about your family history for whimsical wednesday.  talk to your oldest relative, look at old photographs, read about your family name online.  however you wish to learn new (or renew) family history.  any part or all of your family is open to examination.

my father's oldest living sister died several years ago.  dad ended up with a huge envelope of photos and such from her house.  dad never looked at them before he died and mom never has either. i brought them home with me determined to take a peek.  i must confess that i hadn't looked since bringing them home two years ago.  today was the perfect opportunity to delve into that family history.  when i was seven my parents moved us away from most of the family to live elsewhere. my siblings and i didn't grow up knowing most of the family of either of our parents. my aunt's overstuffed, very large, envelope yielded photos of cousins, aunts and uncles, my grandparents, and people i didn't know.

solitude sunday

solitude sunday at the whimsey project. our day to spend time with a book.  any book will do but those that have been waiting to be read for a long time especially.

at the rate i'm going i'll be reading robert hughes' american visions, the epic history of art in america, for the rest of the year!  currently i am reading about early american architecture.  early mansions, plantations houses and such were build using plan books with designs from famous british/european architects.  pick a design from a book or parts of designs for several plans and there's a house!  not unlike modern times.

what are you reading? share your book with us at the whimsey project.

solitude sunday

solitude sunday at the whimsey project. our day to spend time with a book. read any book but especially those that have been resting on the bookshelf for a long time, waiting to be read.

i continue to delve into american visions, the epic history of art in america, by robert hughes. currently i am reading about the puritan influence on art in the early beginnings of english settlements in the new world. one fact that makes sense: as art historians have looked back, they have thought puritan art was stark, without embellishment. what they were looking at, with so much time passed, was that the paint used to brightly color and the decorations in paint had been lost!

solitude sunday

solitude sunday whimsey project. our day to spend time with a book; especially those that have been resting, patiently, on the bookshelf awaiting to be read.

the book i began today is american visions: the epic history of art in america by robert hughes.  unlike a few books i've been reading in a week's time, this one is hefty and will be my companion for awhile.  thus far i have read the introduction and part of the first chapter.  of course, with most early art for a society, it begins with religious art. so does this one. books such as these are enjoyable as you learn about the main topic, art, but it's contextual.  thus, one learns about so much more about the factors that created that time in history.

what are you reading this solitude sunday? share your book with the whimsey project.

miscellaneous

a few months ago, our whimsical wednesday activity was to take a chance.  the chance i took was to rescue a transplant from mom's african violet. although the transplant was carefully nutured, it did not survive. when next in tennessee to visit mom, a new transplant will be brought back to the farm.

the new kitties have integrated successfully.  they are right in the mix with the rest of the household. i knew they were into the routine when they came to the kitchen for the morning treat with the rest of the kitties. they are no longer shy!

whimsical wednesday

it's national wiggle your toes day for whimsical wednesday.  it's also national root beer float day.  wiggle your toes with a twist: wiggle them in a substance; mud, sand, water, rice, mashed potatoes!  and later, enjoy a root beer float.

my toe wiggling experience was most pleasant.  into a large tub filled with hot water, i rested my feet. over my toes i poured epsom salts and began to wiggle.  the wiggling toes melted and mixed the salts into the water. there was a solid chunk of salts in the bag so that went into the tub, under my toes. it was fun to break up the chunk of salts with my toes.  it tickled too. after the salts were dissolved, i began to wiggle my toes again the side of the plastic tub.  that also tickled as the vibrations from the movement of my toes again the plastic were distinct.  the squeaky sound was neat too.  similar to a deep bullfrog ribbit.  a reader commented that wiggling toes before bed can bring sounder sleep so i have been wiggling my toes at night. make toe wiggling a nightly ritual!  there's neither root or float here in the house and i'm not inclined to leave to get any so it's doubtful if i'll be celebrating root beer float day.  and that's ok as toe wiggling was more than enough fun this whimsical wednesday!

how did you celebrate wiggling toes and root beer float day?

solitude sunday

solitude sunday at the whimsey project. our day to spend time with a book. any book will do, however, focus on those long-waiting-to-be-read books already resting on the bookshelves.

having completed the music book during the week, i began cosmopolitanism by kwame anthony appiah. this volume about global ethics is one of the issues of our time series edited by henry louis gates, jr. thus far i have read the introduction which outlines the expansion and number of humans on the planet; how we evolved from small groups of people to the populated world of today.  from knowing everyone within sight our entire lives to knowing relatively few people when considering the global scale of humanity, how should be function ethically in a world of strangers?  i shall find out more during my next reading session.

miscellaneous

this week included paying attention to the results of moments monday. digging through a box of memorabilia, i found it contained several pieces of the grandchildren's art work, drawings and paintings and pictures with lots of stickers. this art work became the covers for several notebooks of different sizes. in addition to their art work, i used ribbon and washi and decorative duct tape to enhance the notebooks. it was satisfying to find a practical purpose for the art. some of the notebooks i will keep to use for memory books and notable notebooks. no doubt megan and jacob would like to have at least one and maybe other family members as well.  it won't be long until the grandchildren are here for their yearly summer visit. i'm getting ready! and they can see the notebooks then.

the blooms are fading on the sunflowers across the road. it's been lovely enjoying them for more than a month.  i got up close to take photographs.  it was encouraging to hear the hum of so many bees! they were busy, busy.  which is good for the flowers and good for the bees since bees are endangered.

summer weather continues to be mild. how lovely to have the windows open and enjoy porch sitting during the "dog days" of summer.  august has arrived.  soon school will begin and it won't be long until fall, then cold weather, arrives.  enjoy summer while it's here to enjoy!

whimsical wednesday

we are writing a story for whimsical wednesday!  a story of sorts, that is.  on this day in 1935, the first penguin paperback book was published. that fact had me thinking about stories we enjoy so much we don't want them to end.  when it does end we think about what happens next to the characters.  for whimsical wednesday, think about a book that enthralled you this much and write a scenario that would continue the story.  any book at any point in your life can be your featured story.

get ready.....

get ready for whimsical wednesday! in 1935 the first penguin paperback book was published! in honor of this grand occasion, we shall write a book! we won't exactly write an entire book but an alternative to a book we enjoy.  when stories end we are often sad it's over and wish the characters could remain with us longer.  one way to make this happen is to extend the story.  think of a story you really enjoyed and write a scenario of what would happen if the story continued.

solitude sunday

solitude sunday at the whimsey project. our day to spend time with a book; especially those books on the shelf waiting to be read.

my time with a book continues with the chronicle of classical music, an intimate diary of the lives and music of the great composers; written by alan kendall.  the advent of opera and its evolution in europe is the history of music i'm reading about now.
