whimsical wednesday

we are writing a story for whimsical wednesday!  a story of sorts, that is.  on this day in 1935, the first penguin paperback book was published. that fact had me thinking about stories we enjoy so much we don't want them to end.  when it does end we think about what happens next to the characters.  for whimsical wednesday, think about a book that enthralled you this much and write a scenario that would continue the story.  any book at any point in your life can be your featured story.

get ready.....

get ready for whimsical wednesday! in 1935 the first penguin paperback book was published! in honor of this grand occasion, we shall write a book! we won't exactly write an entire book but an alternative to a book we enjoy.  when stories end we are often sad it's over and wish the characters could remain with us longer.  one way to make this happen is to extend the story.  think of a story you really enjoyed and write a scenario of what would happen if the story continued.

*memorabilia.  take time to sort through the keepsakes everyone has.  organize by category or year.  put in boxes or scrapbooks or make stuff with it.

solitude sunday

solitude sunday at the whimsey project. our day to spend time with a book; especially those books on the shelf waiting to be read.

my time with a book continues with the chronicle of classical music, an intimate diary of the lives and music of the great composers; written by alan kendall.  the advent of opera and its evolution in europe is the history of music i'm reading about now.

whimsical wednesday

it's anti-boredom month! we are doing neat stuff for whimsical wednesday to keep boredom at bay!

my whimsical wednesday actually came a day early because a special, one-day-only event was yesterday. a friend and i attended a hummingbird festival at the home of another friend. the land of lincoln hummingbird bird banders were on hand to tell us about hummingbirds and to band, identify (m/f), measure and record each bird caught.  birds could be adopted for a small fee, which i purchased.  if my banded hummingbird is ever caught during a banding session in the future, i will be notified!  the following photos depict the process: 1) catching the birds in nets. 2) individual birds placed in small bags. 3) banding and recording the bird. 4) preparing to release the bird (those who adopted a bird were given the experience of releasing birds, thus the transfer of bird from bander to adopter!

NOT SOMETHING YOU SEE EVERY DAY!  while walking the driveway to collect the mail one day last week, i encountered a snake on the driveway; stretched out, catching rays.  from a distance it looked like a piece of rope or a branch about an inch around and about eighteen inches long.  however, it was apparent it was bright green so i was sure it was a snake.  it was. he was on the right side of the driveway so i walked slowly around him on the left side.  when i repeated the return trip he was still there and i walked slowly around him again.  after i got half way toward the house, i turned around to look.  he was still there catching rays.  haven't seen him since, which is just fine with me!

moments monday

moments monday at the whimsey project. our day to reflect and/or connect.  we reflect by writing in any type of journal.  i keep a personal journal, a themed journal about the farm i live on, a memory book in which to record random memories and a notable notebook in which to record random information.  we connect by writing, sending cards, calling, visiting with others or any way that works best for you to connect.

today we'll begin a third aspect of moments monday.  every one, it seems, has a pile of memorabilia; playbills, ticket stubs, photographs, other small bits of reminders of experiences past.  spend time with your keepsakes on moments monday. organize them into notebooks, albums, boxes.  as you make sense of your jumble, take time to enjoy the memories of what each piece represents.  if you find you do not wish to have a particular piece any longer, allow yourself to discard it.

my moments monday was filled with letter writing and card making (get well and thinking of you) and out to the mailbox to be picked up for delivery.  i wrote in my memory book about rainbows, hummingbirds and the fourth of july in the farm journal and several quotes in the notable notebook.

how about you?  how did you reflect and/or connect or dig through your memorabilia this moments monday?

solitude sunday

solitude sunday at the whimsey project. our day to spend time with a book.

my time with heretics and heroes, thomas cahill's volume six in the hinges of history series, continues.  i continue to read about martin luther and thomas more. a major figure of the time is new to me, rabelais. i shall have to read about him in the future. he advised that people "live joyously"; sound advise. also present in the context of this time is ignatius loyola. like francis of assisi, he was born into wealth and power. like francis of assisi, he lived a life of privilege until that moment in his life's experience that began his conversion. he founded the jesuits.

miscellaneous

here's the scottish shortbread recipe i baked for the whimsey project's fourth anniversary on this week's whimical wednesday:

mix together:
1 and 1/4 cups of flour
3 tablespoons sugar

cut in til mixture is crumbly:
1/2 cup of cold butter

once mixture is crumbly, finish blending the dough by hand.  it will still be crumbly and somewhat stiff.  put on a lightly greased cookie sheet, forming an even layer of dough into a square or rectangle.  use a spring form pan and the shape will be round.  lightly score the dough to create pieces (do not cut through the dough).

bake at 325 degrees for 25 to 30 minutes.  the dough should be light golden brown (as the dough bakes, the butter in the dough melts and the shortbread becomes smooth and solid).

after removing the shortbread from the oven, gently cut the pieces by scoring completely through the baked dough using the pre-scored lines. let rest for about 15 minutes.

store shortbread in air tight container (if there's any left to contain)!

this recipe was on better homes and gardens online website, entitled three ingredient shortbread.

enjoy!  it's yummy.

solitude sunday

solitude sunday at the whimsey project. our day to spend time with a book.  any book, especially those books that have languished on the bookshelf you have been "intending" to read.

my journey through thomas cahill's hinges of history series, volume six, heretics and heores continues. this volume explores how renaissance artists and reformation priests created our world.  having completed the renaissance artists section i have been reading about the reformation priests. the two figures that stand out are erasmus and luther; making an impact in the very early 1500s. there is quite a contrast between the two! as is the way they poked at establishment. where erasmus used humor, luther used reasoned theory and logic. one was ignored by authority, most notably the church, and one created the schism that split the church into catholicism and protestantism.  a major hinge in history.

the seven wee kittens are romping about.  they still scatter when they see me. all but one; a yellow who is quite bold.  he doesn't want to be touched and will flee if approached. however, if there's no such threat he's sit rather close and watch everything that is going on. he feels secure enough to take a nap not five feet from me.

map and eli are still in the garage but they come in the house more and more. sometimes i pick them up and bring them into the house to have them sit on my lap for awhile (one at a time since both kitties are huge). this is also progress. when they first arrived, if i attempted to bring them into the house, they would jump down and zip back to the garage.  map hides though. it can be days that i call for her and she doesn't respond. that causes me concern. and then she'll just pop out with a "here i am" demeanor!

the field across the road gets planted in a crop now. last year it was tall corn soldiers marching across the land in formation. this year's crop appeared to be soy beans when first the plants emerged. after a few weeks it became clear the crop was not soy beans but sunflowers! when more of the plants are in full blossom i shall take photographs.

tiny toads are hopping everywhere in the ground vegetation! lots and lots and lots of tiny toads. they are so cute. they make me giggle.

so many gorgeous wildflowers and perennials blooming.

whimsical wednesday!

it's made in the u.s.a. day for whimsical wednesday! if you are out shopping look for items made in the u.s.a. if you are home, look around the house for items made in the u.s.a.  if you are so inclined, make something! if you are in the u.s.a. your creation is then made in the u.s.a.

a tour of the house revealed more items made in the u.s.a. than i imagined there would be. hoping to find at least five items, i moved on to ten as the goal. once i surpassed that number i settled on a dozen items for my made in the u.s.a. search. the results:

*broom made in nashville, tennessee
*torani dark chocolate sauce made in san francisco, california
*pure maple syrup made in wisconsin
*yellow squash and zucchini grown in mt vernon, illinois
*20 mule team borax made in scottsdale, arizona
*formula 3x sprayer bottle made in west broom field, michigan
*american greetings card made in cleveland, ohio

*zim's max-freeze ointment made in north lima, ohio
*pro-sense stool eating deterrent for dogs made in cincinnati, ohio
*perrigo hydrocortisone cream made in bronx, new york
*all the beautiful art in my living room, made all over the u.s.a. by family and friends!
