the year 2019 is almost to it's conclusion! we have a few more weeks to add items to our year's time capsule. if you haven't been gathering items for a 2019 time capsule, today is a great day to begin. in any container, gather items to include in your time capsule. what items should you include? anything that is a memento of special (or everyday) events you experienced throughout the year. the holiday season is upon us so it's the perfect time to gather mementos and, most likely, there are items about the house from the year's events you can still add to your container. on new year's eve or new year's day we will look through our 2019 time capsules and enjoy remembering the year.

whimsical wednesday

my second annual cookie exchange gathering is saturday, december 14th, so it's time to get busy; which makes cookie baking the perfect activity for whimsical wednesday! you could take time to decide what cookies you wish to bake in the next few weeks or bake cookies too or, best of all, share a cookie recipe with the whimsey project!

my cookie baking will be with two others who are participating in the exchange as we decided it would be fun to bake together. we are each making a recipe utilizing a cake mix. my cookie choice is rocky road, a chocolate cookie that includes marshmallows, nuts and chocolate chips.  the recipe:

*1 box of chocolate cake mix (15.25 oz)
*2 large eggs
*1/2 cup vegetable oil

mix eggs and oil then add to the cake mix until all the ingredients are thoroughly blended.

add one or two or all, one at a time and mix thoroughly:
*1/4 to 1/3 cup chopped nuts
*1/4 to 1/3 cup mini marshmallows
*1/4 to 1/3 cup chocolate chips

*arrange teaspoons of dough on greased cookie sheets with a bit of space in between each cookie.
*bake in a 350 degree preheated oven for 10 minutes, checking at 8 minutes for doneness as ovens vary.
*after removing from the oven let rest for two minutes than remove the cookies from the cookie sheet.

an entry from my daily whimsical moments notebook dated september 4th: "our little buck sat down in the grass near the house for a rest."  there are a few mama deer that have and raise their babies on our land. our little buck, as we call him, is her yearling. he began growing antlers in the spring; just wee nubs at the beginning. he, along, with mama and her twins born this spring, come often to the yard to snuffle up cracked corn thrown in the grass for the birds. the day he sat down in the yard, so close to the house, he was alone sniffing for corn and then he sat! just hanging out in the yard the way a dog would. our little buck!

are you keeping a daily whimsical moments notebook? if not, today is a great day to begin. any notebook will do; develop whatever system works best for you. each day pay attention to those moments that catch your attention or take you by surprise or make you laugh or pause in thought. at the end of the day, record a moment in your notebook.  some days i have more than one so i record them all.  one cannot have too many daily whimsical moments, after all! this daily activity allows us to find a moment of whimsey in a day that might not have been as pleasant or easy as we would have liked. also, we can look back through our whimsical moments notebook and read how wonderful our days actually are amid the responsibilities of life.

solitude sunday

solitude sunday at the whimsey project. our day to spend time with a book. my book continues to be steven feld's sound and sentiment: birds, weeping, poetics, and song in kaluli expression. this book details an ethnographic study of sound as a cultural system among the kaluli people of papua new guinea.

solitude sunday at the whimsey project. our day to spend time with a book. i am reading michael faquhar's a treasury of royal scandals: the shocking true stories of history's wickedest, weirdest, most wanton kings, queens, tsars, popes and emperors. wow! talk about people behaving badly; eye popping examples of extreme hubris!

whimsical wednesday

it's the first wednesday of august; our day to make connections for whimsical wednesday. call, write, email, text, send a card to others. get together with people you haven't seen in awhile. surprise someone with something, anything, no matter how simple or small (such as a single flower, a few tea bags, their favorite candy). everyone likes to be thought of and it means so much to both giver and recipient.

my whimsical wednesday connections will include writing a bunch of catch up letters to people who have written me that need responses. and, for a surprise, i will give a friend a bottle of spice (powdered lemon of all things!) i found online that she had been unable to find locally. and make arrangements to get together with friends on a later date.

miscellaneous monday

postcrossing! i received an email from postcrossing on saturday, august 3rd wishing me a happy postcrossingversary. i have been postcrossing for three years. in that time i have sent and received 185 postcards from all around the world including the united states. when cards arrive in the mail, they are admired or giggled at, dated and put in the postcrossing card box. there are no plans for the cards other than to store them at this point. throwing them away is out of the question as they represent so much and they are potential art journaling fodder! every one who participates in postcrossing does it differently. my practice is to send five or six cards a month, all prepared in one session and mailed at the same time. if you might be interested in participating here's the link to making friends around the world:

whimsical wednesday

we are celebrating uncommon musical instruments day for whimsical wednesday! here's a link to learn more about this day:

https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/uncommon-instrument-awareness-day/

let's get creative! look in the kitchen or toolbox or closets. select items you think might make music! (we define music as any sound that comes from the "uncommon" instrument in any pattern or rhythm.)  bang, shake, strum, pick at the items you have selected. play them solo or play them with a song or instrumental accompaniment. like what you hear? share your uncommon musical instruments adventure with the whimsey project!

a grand time was had this whimsical wednesday making music on unconventional instruments!
*from the bathroom, two hairbrushes were rubbed together, then separately with my fingers. a strumming sound was the result.
*in the kitchen, there were several "instruments" to employ for music making:
#lots of shaking with food containers: box of macaroni, jar of pop corn, canister of oatmeal, cans of salsa, black beans, sweetened condensed milk, a bottle of vegetable oil and a box of stevia sweetener packets.
#from the refrigerator a bag of fresh cherries was shaken as was a bottle of milk, a container of bread crumbs and a bag of whole shelled walnuts.
*the craft supply shelves had me shaking containers of findings, tacks and miscellaneous supplies.
*the knife drawer offered music with the knife sharpener and a few knives.
*the kitchen utensil drawers offered measuring spoons, whisks, tongs and scissors.
*the miscellaneous item drawer in the kitchen brought a wonderful sound from all the various keys gathered together and shaking them all at the same time.
*a homemade instrument was created by putting bottle caps and corks in an empty cocoa baking powder, replacing the lid and shaking away.

solitude sunday at the whimsey project. our day to spend time with a book. i am reading konrad z. lorenz's king solomon's ring. mr lorenz was one of the most influential naturalists of the 20th century. a whimsical feature of his writing is there are wee drawings of animals in the margin of the book pages; depictions of the animals currently being discussed in the chapters. what are you reading? share your book with the whimsey project!
