thoughtful thursday

a quiet house.  a quiet house is the result of a full house that has become empty. empty of occupancy.  the occupancy that brings laughter, sharing, discussion, chores, support, love and caring.  in the quiet that results, savor those moments of a full house; recall, remember, revel.  a quiet house is then still very, very full.

thoughtful thursday

the grandchildren's visit officially ends later today.  they will be here through the weekend, but their mother will be joining us.  we are looking forward to her being with us, however, her addition definitely changes the dynamic.

we have (of course) kept a journal of our days together. the journal, begun during the very first visit here without parents, recounts all we do together. all three of us write in it each day. we keep an accounting of the visit(s) in order to allow their parents to peek into our daily doings because, as everyone knows; remembering everything just doesn't happen. the journal allows for questions to be asked and prompts conversation.

keeping the journal has become a ritual for us. as time passes and there will no longer be summer visits between grandmother and grandchildren, the journal will be memories preserved. perhaps the grandchildren will enjoy reading about their visits to the farm when they are older. and perhaps they will share the journal with their children someday!

whimsical wednesday

we're creating shadow silhouettes this whimsical wednesday.  what is needed?  a hard surface like a sidewalk, chalk, sunshine and two persons!  one person stands on the hard surface with the sun at the back while one person traces the shadow with the chalk.  then change places!

since the only hard surface is on the west side of the house, megan, jacob and i will have to wait until late afternoon to create our shadow silhouettes.  and when we do. we'll have lots of fun!  where did you create your shadow silhouette this whimsical wednesday?

whimsical wdnesday

it's particularly preposterous packaging day for whimsical wednesday!  (for more information on PPPd, see the get ready post for monday, august 5th.)

reader suz sent a photo of the packaging for the inkjet cartridge she put in her printer:

often it's the least elaborate, seemingly simple packaging that drives me crazy!  that "just tear here" on a package of cheese that will open the package DOESN'T just tear here!!!!!  i usually have to resort to scissors to open it.  the package comes complete with one of those "zippers" that is supposed to make re-sealing the package simple.  simple!?!?!  i can never get the zipper to close and stay closed so i roll the package "closed"and secure with a rubber band!  or the bottle of over the counter medicine i opened this morning?  plastic seal around the lid that has a tear off here area.  for me, this results in the same action as with the just tear here on the cheese package: scissors!  unscrew the lid and there's a foam cover on the opening of the bottle.  that never just tears off for me so it's scissors time again.  get that off and look inside the bottle. it's stuffed with cotton!  for me that's particularly preposterous packaging!

a suggested activity for today was to wrap a gift for someone with particularly preposterous packaging! there's lots of packaging around here (the recycle bin in the garage).  throughout today i'll sift through the recycling and what's still in the house and, when inspired, add that to the day long gift wrapping session i'll be enjoying.  a photo will appear at some point here on the blog.

not something you see every day!

one of my favorite whimsey days, NOT SOMETHING YOU SEE EVERY DAY! it's your opportunity to share a crazy, zany, atypical, giggles experience with us!

Monday, August 5, 2013

get ready.....

we'll be celebrating "particularly preposterous packaging day" this whimsical wednesday.  particularly preposterous packaging day is dedicated to all the crazy and overblown packaging in which products are cloaked in, as well as the insane instructions that come on or in the packaging.

for whimsical wednesday, look at packaging you might still have at home from recent purchases or those on store shelves.  take note of elaborate packaging and/or seemingly ridiculous instructions.  share those with us!  additionally, consider creating elaborate packaging of your own.  wrap a gift for someone who would enjoy the fun of unwrapping it.  the gift doesn't have to be delivered on wednesday, just wrap one for future gifting.

here's how the blog, occasionally speaking, describes the day:

August 7 - Particularly Preposterous Packaging Day

We've all encountered them at some point. Our long awaited, hard earned purchase out of our reach as it's encased in hard plastic, cardboard, and impossibly strong tape! Today is set aside for us to moan and complain about the consumer packaging that provides us with so many challenges. Today is also a celebration of the incongruous package directions and instructions that are often the result of very literal translations. Here's a couple of examples: "Do not use while sleeping" (found on a hairdryer box); "Not to be used for the other use" (instructions for a Japanese food processor); "Do not iron clothes on body" (instructions for an iron). Have a laugh and try not to hurt yourself opening your purchase!
