whimsical wednesday

cooking for whimsical wednesday! we are preparing an old family recipe. any recipe that comes from a friend or family member, preferably a standard or special occasion recipe that was part of your growing up tradition.

i'm spending time with my mother and my brother will be visiting today. for supper i will be cooking mostacholli. it's a standard in our family and eaten throughout the st louis area, from which we originated. everyone in our large, extended family cooks mostacholli. i haven't had it in years so i am looking forward to both cooking and eating whimsical wednesday's chosen family recipe.

mostacholli recipe:

one to two pounds round steak, browned, cut into bite sized pieces (today weight was 1.75 lb)

saute the following in pan used to brown meat:
2 cups chopped celery
2 cups chopped green pepper
1/2 onion

add:
one large can of crushed tomatoes
1/2 tomato can of water (up to full can of water depending on consistency desired)
1 tablespoon chili powder
return cut up steak to the pan
cook until meat is tender and flavors blended. (cook on simmer for several hours)

during last 15 minutes of cooking:
add small can of mushrooms, liquid and all.

serve over noodles.

want more mostacholli? double the recipe.
as mom tells me, this is not a recipe a person cooking can ruin. go with it.  and change it up to suit personal taste! less celery, more green pepper, no mushrooms or more mushrooms. enjoy!

miscellaneous monday

miscellaneous monday at the whimsey project! our day to share all the stuff we don't share the rest of the week. what say you about miscellaneous?

have you been recording daily whimsical moments? my diary is filled with moments that have made me smile. the one i'll share is thursday, april, 20, 2017.  i noted that the grass surrounding mom's house is filled with what some would classify as weeds. these weeds have produced a variety of color; red, yellow, white, blue, purple in blossoms so tiny one has to pay close attention to see them. once seen, what a sight to behold.

get ready.....

we are cooking for whimsical wednesday! be thinking about a recipe your mother, grandmother, aunt, other family member or friend cooked. make sure you have all the ingredients ready for wednesday.

solitude sunday

solitude sunday at the whimsey project. our day to spend time with a book. what are you reading?

anne goldgar, tulipmania. what i have read thus far has set the scene for what became tulipmania. it seems in the era, gardening was only for the wealthy. as soon as "others" began to garden (for beauty) the upper class no longer thought gardening was so grand because it was no longer exclusive.

it is my experience that sometimes travel takes a lot longer than expected. so much longer the destination could be reached and then the return trip made with time to spare. this is not fun trivia.

miscellaneous monday

miscellaneous monday at the whimsey project! our day to share all the stuff we don't share the rest of the week. what say you miscellaneous?

it's time once again for the farm to become a nursery for all the wildlife. the canada geese pair are back, sitting on eggs in the nest they created for the pending brood. the raccoon is visiting the cat food feeding area more frequently. her kits are high in a tree somewhere.  in a few months we'll be seeing them romp around. more birds' nests are evident. and those are just what we can see. i like to imagine all the rest along with what comes into view.

get ready.....

get ready for whimsical wednesday! we will be preparing for easter sunday on the 16th. what fun activity or decoration or new egg dyeing technique do you want to try? i have a few ideas already.

a new book begns this week. tulipmania: money, honor and knowledge in the dutch golden age by anne goldgar. this book examines the golden age of holland by focusing on the up and down prices of tulip bulbs. a fascinating premise begins.

3. so says mapache kitty.  she wrote that it's national caramel day for whimsical wedneday! we are all things caramel today! enjoy caramels however you wish but, definitely, at the very least, eat some!

it occurred to me that i had never made caramel from a recipe, having always used candy caramels or jarred caramel sauce from the grocery store. this gap in my culinary experience sent me on a quest to find a simple caramel sauce recipe and cook away.  the following is the recipe i found and used:

http://allrecipes.com/recipe/245648/oh-so-easy-caramel-sauce/

very simple to do with items a kitchen typically has in stock. and quick.  it didn't take long at all. after making the sauce and letting it cool for five minutes, i poured it over a layer of cinnamon toast crunch cereal (spread on parchment paper on a cookie sheet). it is cooling and hardening now as i post. i might be pouring a thin layer of melted chocolate over the caramel covered cereal as well! so far the tiny sample of caramel and cereal was yum!

miscellaneous monday at the whimsey project. our day to share all the stuff we don't share the rest of the week. what say you regarding miscellaneous?

there's a reason i post on the whimsey project blog early in the day. if i don't it gets away from me. i can remind myself all day to post on the whimsey project blog. then i find myself lying in bed at night and it suddenly occurs to me that i hadn't posted on the whimsey project blog! forgetfulness? too busy? too many distractions? early in the day for important tasks is the remedy!

get ready.....

get ready for whimsical wednesday! we are celebrating national caramel day! oh, the possibilities!

dr tabin has fulfilled his goal of taking eye saving surgery to africa. the author of second suns, david oliver relin, was along on that mission. his role was to gather information for the book. however, there were so many in need and helping hands so few that he put his notebook away and helped with the patients. during that mission 903 patients had their sight restored.
