miscellaneous monday

an entry from my daily whimsical moments notebook dated september 4th: "our little buck sat down in the grass near the house for a rest."  there are a few mama deer that have and raise their babies on our land. our little buck, as we call him, is her yearling. he began growing antlers in the spring; just wee nubs at the beginning. he, along, with mama and her twins born this spring, come often to the yard to snuffle up cracked corn thrown in the grass for the birds. the day he sat down in the yard, so close to the house, he was alone sniffing for corn and then he sat! just hanging out in the yard the way a dog would. our little buck!

are you keeping a daily whimsical moments notebook? if not, today is a great day to begin. any notebook will do; develop whatever system works best for you. each day pay attention to those moments that catch your attention or take you by surprise or make you laugh or pause in thought. at the end of the day, record a moment in your notebook.  some days i have more than one so i record them all.  one cannot have too many daily whimsical moments, after all! this daily activity allows us to find a moment of whimsey in a day that might not have been as pleasant or easy as we would have liked. also, we can look back through our whimsical moments notebook and read how wonderful our days actually are amid the responsibilities of life.

if you are currently keeping a whimsical moments notebook, share an entry with the whimsey project.

solitude sunday

solitude sunday at the whimsey project. our day to spend time with a book. i found the neatest book; tales from shakespeare by charles and mary lamb. first published in 1807, this volume of shakespeare's plays was written in prose to better introduce students to the works of the bard. for someone who does not read fiction i am finding this book very pleasant; perhaps because it seems more like a reference book than a book of fiction. one aspect of shakespeare i have discovered by reading the plays written in prose is that the stories are mere fairy tales! and there's always a moral to the story.

whimsical wednesday

we're making homemade sprinkles for whimsical wednesday!

here's a link to three versions of the baking delight:

http://www.awwsam.com/2016/09/3-ways-to-make-your-own-sprinkles.html

make sprinkles and share your experience with the whimsey project!

*wednesday afternoon...

my homemade sprinkles have been made. having no piping bag i improvised with sandwich baggies. there wasn't a lot of control with this method but it worked well enough. some of the lines were too thick. the thinner lines dried quickly but the thicker ones took more than a few hours to dry. once the lines were broken up the sprinkles were decent. store bought sprinkles are so small i have never actually tasted them. i sampled a large piece of the homemade sprinkles; it tasted like cotton candy. the sprinkles will be stored in an air tight container until such time as a baking opportunity arises to use them.  yes, i will use them.  after all, i made them!

whimsical wednesday

we are celebrating national "make your bed" day for whimsical wednesday! yes, there's a holiday for the mundane task of bed making; of which it is said there are benefits:

https://www.timeanddate.com/holidays/fun/make-your-bed-day

to celebrate, well, make your bed! if this is not your habit, perhaps doing so will cause you to discover the joys of bed making.  other ways to celebrate "make your bed" day might include washing the bed linens or changing the linens to refresh the bedroom decor. look through catalogs, magazines or online store sites and enjoy browsing the variety of bed linens. what would you select? would it be similar to what you already have or would it dramatically alter the look of your bedroom? do you prefer a particular type of sheet? maybe you'll discover something new! share your "make your bed" experience with the whimsey project.

i won't just make my bed, i will wash the bed linens and then make the bed! sheets. when flannel sheets were first available i thought those would be grand. however, i did not find them to be grand. sleeping encased in flannel caused me to roast as if i were in an oven! knit sheets aren't quite as heat inducing, however, regular cotton sheets offer the best sleeping comfort.  there are plenty of beautiful spreads, comforters, quilts that could cover my bed and i have several in the linen closet. they are in the closet because nice bed linens and pets do not mix.  i enjoy looking at them on the shelves! i prefer pets to fine bed linens.
