my favorite holiday activity is participating in a cookie exchange. i did so for several years until that group disbanded. a few years passed without a cookie exchange and i missed it. this year that changed when i began a new cookie exchange! our gathering was saturday the fifteenth. everyone who was invited to participate did so eagerly. we enjoyed lunch (my nephew smoked the meat for the pulled pork and it was awesome!) and sitting around the fireplace talking and laughing and having a wonderful time.  and such a variety of cookies! soooooo many cookies! amazingly no one baked chocolate chip! we laughed about that. my cookies are given as christmas gifts so there's a bounty to share this year. everyone agreed the cookie exchange will be a new holiday tradition.

i happened upon a recipe for edible play clay in an old magazine i had in a stack used for art journaling. created by ashley ogle for "mary janes farm" magazine, it looked awesome! the clay was made for my two year old buddy. for a christmas gift, the clay was paired with wee cookie cutters for wee hands and a copy of the recipe for mom and dad so they could make more. here's the recipe:

*mix together 1/4 cup powdered milk and 1/4 cup flour.
*mix together 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter and 1/4 cup honey.
*add one mixture into the other, stirring until completely blended and the mixture is smooth.

for play time tape a piece of freezer paper (shiny side up) onto the table for the wee one to use as a mat for the clay. if the clay becomes sticky or too soft to play with, put it in the refrigerator for 10 to 15 minutes.

it's national pickle day!! we are celebrating the pickle! do something awesomely whimsical with the pickle. think outside the hamburger-dill-chip box and get creative. pickling is what we are after today not just the end result! how did you celebrate national pickle day? share your experience with the whimsey project!

i made homemade pickles with carrots and zucchini for an upcoming event i am hosting. results will be pending as no pickle is eaten before it's time! or something like that...

the recipe i modified is from www.mccormick.com
"easy summertime sweet pickles":

1 medium zucchini cut into discs
12 baby carrots cut into quarters lengthwise
1 cup apple cider vinegar
1 cup water
1/2 cup sugar or splenda
dash of sea salt
dash of onion powder
10 whole cloves

an old pickle jar was used. with measurements indicated in the glass i was able to mix the liquid right in the jar, shaking the jar vigorously to mix thoroughly. then the pre-cut carrots were added, followed by the zucchini. why this order? the carrots are heavier and sink to the bottom. the zucchini is lighter and floats to the top!

we are celebrating national bologna day for whimsical wednesday! the possibilities are endless so share what you did to celebrate the exalted bologna with the whimsey project!

an excursion to the local grocery store was the beginning of the national bologna day celebration! there was a lot of bologna and that's no baloney! bologna ranged in price from $1.00 for 12 ounces to $10.00 for a 40 ounce jar of rope bologna. one could purchase all manner of bologna: thick cut, thin cut, cased, uncased, gluten free, pickled, rope. since i did not want a lot of bologna, i opted to purchase the smallest package of 12 ounces for $1.00.  and i got it cased.

we ate cased bologna as kids and part of the charm was to be able to take the ring of casing off the bologna without tearing the bologna. if any bologna was left on the casing we either nibbled that off with our teeth or ran a fingernail around the casing to remove the bologna.  i wasn't able to get the bologna off without tearing so i got to nibble and use a fingernail. i did that kid thing that i haven't done since i was a kid!

we ate bologna cold or fried.  i had a bit of it cold and it wasn't very tasty.  that is either due to my older taste buds or the quality of the bologna or both.  a piece was fried. and, once it was in the skillet, a few scores were cut into the edge of the bologna to keep it from curling while cooking. it was those little scores in the bologna that i liked even though it had no bearing on the flavor.  (try eating fried bologna without scoring. the outcome is a circle of domed meat!) the cold bologna didn't suit me but the fried bologna with spicy brown mustard on it was quite tasty.

as fun as the bologna memory lane was for national bologna day, i did not want any more than i had already eaten. the remainder of the package was gifted to someone who enjoys bologna.

here's an article about the origins of bologna:

for more time than i care to consider i have been aware that, with friends, i initiate contact more often than they do. while i don't make new year's resolutions, this year i determined i would expect reciprocity in relationships. what does that mean, reciprocity? it means that i wanted people to initiate contact as much as i did; to reach out to me the way i reached out to them.

through the year i have initiated contact with others be it email, phone calls, texting, letters or actually getting together. after doing so for a few times i then waited for the gestures to be returned. the results after most of the year passing? many people i haven't heard a peep from. one person called me after a few months and barked, "i haven't heard from you!" my reply of, "and i haven't heard from you!" was met with silence. if people reached out, i responded, however, the length between connections has grown greater and greater. i have been in the company of some i have waited a response from but it was because someone else did the inviting.

it is doubtful that any of the persons involved mean any harm, no malice intended. it's also doubtful that many are aware of their lack of action. even so, there is then no relationship because it takes everyone involved for a relationship to happen. if people do not wish a real friendship i'm ok with that and i wish them well. my focus, my energy will be given to those who are as invested in me as i am in them.
