whimsical wednesday at the whimsey project! today we are browsing our 2016 whimsical moments calendar/diary/journal. at the end of last year we put together something to record a whimsical moment of each day of 2016. nothing fancy, just a place to scribble whimsey. today we will share a few of our whimsical moments for 2016 and prepare a new book for 2017. this activity is worthy of a repeat! if you didn't participate in 2016 or did not participate on a regular basis, consider doing so for 2017. it's happily whimsical!

for 2017 i have a date book just like the one i used for 2016. i am looking forward to finishing this year's whimsical moments and begin experiencing whimsical moments in 2017.

the day after christmas. it can be just as engaging as the holiday itself. when my children were young, it was a day to either undertake a special project at home or go somewhere on an adventure. projects typically included something arts and crafts. adventures typically to some neat place like a state or national park or a museum. we called it "celebrating the day after the holiday"! do (or did) you do something special the day after a holiday? what did you do? share with the whimsey project!

it's national bah humbug day for whimsical wednesday! it's the day to vent all the stress and frustrations one feels over the holidays. make a list of what makes you crabby! then tear it up, burn it, cross out the list, banish it forever! now you are relaxed and ready to proceed.

my bah humbug list:
*people getting bent out of shape over a "happy holidays" greeting! there are so many holidays smashed into a short amount of time that, since forever, people have been saying "happy holidays"! say "merry christmas" if desired but there's no reason to get upset if others offer a heartfelt "happy holidays"!
*gifts by shopping list.  i remember when people got stuff or made stuff for others. they never asked the recipient what they wanted. part of the feeling of the gift was to think of that person and select something you think they would enjoy. asking someone what they want for christmas and getting that makes us personal shoppers, not gift selectors!
*worrying about whether a gift recipient will like what is gifted them. really? no one owes anyone a gift regardless of holiday tradition (the three wise men bearing gifts). if someone is kind enough to offer anything at the holidays, be gracious, grateful and appreciative. even if the item given is hated, love it anyway for the gesture it represents. there's always re-gifting. we all do that because we all know someone who will appreciate what isn't our taste.
*feeling obligated because of what someone might think. if something over the holidays is beyond your interest or ability, let it go.
*allowing expectations or should be to get in the way of the reality. just enjoy whatever the holidays are. they seem to be different from year to year even if it feels otherwise. some years will be better than others.
*employer sponsored holiday parties. never a good idea so says miss manners and i concur.
*that family member(s) that ruins everything and the adults in the room ignore rather than address. even excuse the behavior! bah humbug!!!
aaaaahhhh.....  i feel better already!

tis the season to send and receive holiday greeting cards. cards have always been a favorite item for me. coming via the mailbox to wish me whatever the occasion dictates. sometimes there's no reason; a just because. additionally i view greeting cards as miniature works of art. whether homemade or store bought, post card or in an envelope, silly or sweet, photograph or graphic, i like them all. i also like to send cards just as much as i like to receive them.

we are santa for whimsical wednesday! our activity for today is to think of people you know or know of who you would like to bring cheer and a huge smile.
*make a list of your giftees. make it a list of someone you are not already giving gifts to. maybe the local police or fire departments or other public service people. also, the mail carrier, trash collector, paper delivery person.  maybe someone at a store that has provided you with great service. or the doctor's or dentist's office staff. or people you know from somewhere who will be alone during the holidays. you get the idea.....
*determine what you will gift. make a batch of cookies or candy, homemade jelly or jam, drink mix like hot chocolate, hand stamped postcards or a happy saying stamped on a card for posting on the refridgerator. if you aren't a maker, consider items from the dollar store. a large candy bar, a small box of cookies, scented soap or candles. pencils, notepads. there are lots of options. always look around the house first. you might have the perfect gifts right at home.
*you can shop if that's your plan.
*you can wrap as well.
*you do not have to deliver on this day unless it's convenient.

my masterpiece is a collage from two catalogues. i had four to look through but only really liked items in two. rather than cut out flowers/plants from the jackson and perkins catalogue, i used the cover as the base for the rest of the items selected. this page will go into my art journal that has lots of miscellaneous work.

our thanksgiving holiday weekend was more than successful. it was wonderful, grand, pleasant, goofy, playful and everything else whimsical. by sunday evening the house was empty and quiet and felt so large. it would be the perfect time to feel sad but it was, instead, the perfect time to feel full of five days just spent.

fitzroy maclaean's, eastern approactes, is approaching it's end. as i read along i was awaiting the arrival of part three. more pages were on the left side of the book than on the right side. where was part three i continued to wonder? it was there all the time, i just missed it. i've been in part three for at least two weeks. remember that our hero was on a special mission for the british government; not a regular military guy. his mission was completed and he's on his way back to britian, with several stops intervening.

did you know you can still purchase old fashioned hair spray? my artist daughter told me hair spray could be used as a fixative for art media, like chalk and pastels. it's cheaper than the type sold in arts and crafts stores. the quest began. i found hair spray; aqua net in the tall metal can, just like what mom used when i was a kid. good to know that some things don't change!

whimsical wednesday at the whimsey project! our activity for today is to examine the mail. we aren't just going to look at the mail; we are going to really look at it! as you go through today's mail, take your time. i typically sort the mail before looking at it; meaning that i put the mail in categories: personal, junk, bills and other important stuff, before opening any of it. then i begin with the junk and work my way to the the personal stuff so i can save the best for last. today i will add a few more steps to the routine. each piece of mail will be examined thoroughly. i will look at the stamp, the return address, anything on the back of the envelope and the font of the print. once opened, is the envelope lined (security envelope) as in the inside of the envelope is printed with a pattern. what color is the ink? i'll look at each piece enclosed in the envelope. anything interesting inside: not just the content either! i will do this with each piece of mail. and if there's anything neat, i will put it in the art journaling supply box! what you discover in your mail today? share what you found with the whimsey project!

"i just decided to!" that's a phrase i say to myself at various points throughout the year. something will tug at me and i pay attention to that tug. that's when i say, "i just decided to!" this typically takes the form of something i have been thinking about doing and just haven't or something that frustrates me or just pokes at me to pay attention. the latest, "i just decided to!" is years in the making. for creative outlet i art journal. every bit of it suits me except my handwriting/printing. finally, last week, i just decided to get better at hand lettering, as the experts call it. books written for kids (the novice) in the skill of hand lettering arrived friday last and i have been practicing. how utterly satisfying to get an O just so! i hope you will "just decide to" do something for yourself!

eastern approaches by fitzroy maclean continues. the chapter finished today detailed the trial of several high-level soviet government officials. a show trial for these people to be found guilty of crimes they did not commit. a very interesting spectacle.

my reading session today begins a new volume; eastern approaches by fitzroy maclean. maclean, a member of the british diplomatic corps before, during and after world war two, offers his experiences. he was stationed in paris and asked to be stationed in russia so that he might have closer access to those places in the east he longed to visit. we'll find out if he is successful.

neko atsume. neko atsume is an online application for smart phones that allows a person to collect kitties. i play this game. which is surprising because i have never played an online game. however, this one is different. it's gentle and sweet. the kitties are very whimsical. the best reason to play is the rest of the family does. we share with each other when we have had a visit from one of the rare kitties. we share with each other when one of the kitties leaves a memento. we share strategy of what goodies to purchase with the fish the kitties leave as gifts when they have visited. we share when a record number of kitties is visiting at the same time. we share the different room remodels we have installed. in short, neko atsume is grand for family time; even (and especially) from a distance! read about it here:

saints and strangers by george f willison is the history of the pilgrims. after almost 200 hundred pages of the book, the pilgrims have finally made it across the atlantic ocean to the new world. as if they haven't experienced enough already, more trouble awaits them. from what i read about their experiences thus far, it's amazing they even made it to the new world!

whimsical wednesday! we're playing room to room. how do you play room to room? take at least five minutes in each room of your house. why? because we tend to routinely occupy the same spaces of our homes. for whimsical wednesday visit the spaces you rarely or never go. for me that's upstairs and the living room. bathrooms exempt. we certainly visit those rooms enough! what should you do when going to room to room? read, look around, close your eyes for a break, sip tea. or nothing at all. visit all the rooms in a single span of time or spread the visits throughout the day. report your experience to the whimsey project!

george f willison's, saints and strangers, continues. the group of people we know as the pilgrims are in their early stages of existence. they have already suffered many, many trials. they are not opposed to religion as is practiced in england; they are opposed to some of the more damaging aspects of religion as is practiced by the clergy and those in power. therein lies a significant difference. this book is long, dense with detail and a writing style that takes getting used to. i will be at this book for awhile.

let's review our whimsey journal today! on january 1, 2016, we began a whimsey journal. each day we record a whimsical (fun, happy, exciting, unusual, surprising) aspect of each day; recorded in a calendar, planner, diary, notebook, whatever. throughout the year we have visited our whimsey moments journal. today is such a day. my entry to share follows:

on thursday, august 11th, the grandchildren and i played cards: go fish and old maid. we had delivered pizza for supper! we have been playing go fish and old maid every summer since they began visiting me. the delivery was exciting because it's a pizza place that will deliver all the way to my door! not something that happens often when a body lives in the country!

logbook for grace by robert cushman murphy is finished. he's returned home to grace. this book was non-fiction that read like a novel. it included action, adventure, romance, science, history, geography. and so much more. i highly recommend it.
