solitude sunday

solitude sunday at the whimsey project.  our day to spend time with a book; especially those books that you have on the shelf and have been meaning to read for awhile.

chapter two of robert hughes' american visions, the epic history of art in america, ends with the introduction of well crafted, ornate furniture beyond that of the puritan or shaker utilitarian style.  ornate in that the works of chippendale as described by the author as exuberant and with finesse. also, john smibert was the first european trained painter to make his home in america.  his style of painting portraits influenced an entire generation of american born artists.

solitude sunday

solitude sunday at the whimsey project. our day to spend time with a book.  any book will do but those that have been waiting to be read for a long time especially.

at the rate i'm going i'll be reading robert hughes' american visions, the epic history of art in america, for the rest of the year!  currently i am reading about early american architecture.  early mansions, plantations houses and such were build using plan books with designs from famous british/european architects.  pick a design from a book or parts of designs for several plans and there's a house!  not unlike modern times.

what are you reading? share your book with us at the whimsey project.

solitude sunday

solitude sunday at the whimsey project. our day to spend time with a book. read any book but especially those that have been resting on the bookshelf for a long time, waiting to be read.

i continue to delve into american visions, the epic history of art in america, by robert hughes. currently i am reading about the puritan influence on art in the early beginnings of english settlements in the new world. one fact that makes sense: as art historians have looked back, they have thought puritan art was stark, without embellishment. what they were looking at, with so much time passed, was that the paint used to brightly color and the decorations in paint had been lost!

solitude sunday

solitude sunday whimsey project. our day to spend time with a book; especially those that have been resting, patiently, on the bookshelf awaiting to be read.

the book i began today is american visions: the epic history of art in america by robert hughes.  unlike a few books i've been reading in a week's time, this one is hefty and will be my companion for awhile.  thus far i have read the introduction and part of the first chapter.  of course, with most early art for a society, it begins with religious art. so does this one. books such as these are enjoyable as you learn about the main topic, art, but it's contextual.  thus, one learns about so much more about the factors that created that time in history.

what are you reading this solitude sunday? share your book with the whimsey project.

miscellaneous

a few months ago, our whimsical wednesday activity was to take a chance.  the chance i took was to rescue a transplant from mom's african violet. although the transplant was carefully nutured, it did not survive. when next in tennessee to visit mom, a new transplant will be brought back to the farm.

the new kitties have integrated successfully.  they are right in the mix with the rest of the household. i knew they were into the routine when they came to the kitchen for the morning treat with the rest of the kitties. they are no longer shy!

whimsical wednesday

it's national wiggle your toes day for whimsical wednesday.  it's also national root beer float day.  wiggle your toes with a twist: wiggle them in a substance; mud, sand, water, rice, mashed potatoes!  and later, enjoy a root beer float.

my toe wiggling experience was most pleasant.  into a large tub filled with hot water, i rested my feet. over my toes i poured epsom salts and began to wiggle.  the wiggling toes melted and mixed the salts into the water. there was a solid chunk of salts in the bag so that went into the tub, under my toes. it was fun to break up the chunk of salts with my toes.  it tickled too. after the salts were dissolved, i began to wiggle my toes again the side of the plastic tub.  that also tickled as the vibrations from the movement of my toes again the plastic were distinct.  the squeaky sound was neat too.  similar to a deep bullfrog ribbit.  a reader commented that wiggling toes before bed can bring sounder sleep so i have been wiggling my toes at night. make toe wiggling a nightly ritual!  there's neither root or float here in the house and i'm not inclined to leave to get any so it's doubtful if i'll be celebrating root beer float day.  and that's ok as toe wiggling was more than enough fun this whimsical wednesday!

how did you celebrate wiggling toes and root beer float day?

solitude sunday

solitude sunday at the whimsey project. our day to spend time with a book. any book will do, however, focus on those long-waiting-to-be-read books already resting on the bookshelves.

having completed the music book during the week, i began cosmopolitanism by kwame anthony appiah. this volume about global ethics is one of the issues of our time series edited by henry louis gates, jr. thus far i have read the introduction which outlines the expansion and number of humans on the planet; how we evolved from small groups of people to the populated world of today.  from knowing everyone within sight our entire lives to knowing relatively few people when considering the global scale of humanity, how should be function ethically in a world of strangers?  i shall find out more during my next reading session.

miscellaneous

this week included paying attention to the results of moments monday. digging through a box of memorabilia, i found it contained several pieces of the grandchildren's art work, drawings and paintings and pictures with lots of stickers. this art work became the covers for several notebooks of different sizes. in addition to their art work, i used ribbon and washi and decorative duct tape to enhance the notebooks. it was satisfying to find a practical purpose for the art. some of the notebooks i will keep to use for memory books and notable notebooks. no doubt megan and jacob would like to have at least one and maybe other family members as well.  it won't be long until the grandchildren are here for their yearly summer visit. i'm getting ready! and they can see the notebooks then.

the blooms are fading on the sunflowers across the road. it's been lovely enjoying them for more than a month.  i got up close to take photographs.  it was encouraging to hear the hum of so many bees! they were busy, busy.  which is good for the flowers and good for the bees since bees are endangered.

summer weather continues to be mild. how lovely to have the windows open and enjoy porch sitting during the "dog days" of summer.  august has arrived.  soon school will begin and it won't be long until fall, then cold weather, arrives.  enjoy summer while it's here to enjoy!
