solitude sunday

solitude sunday at the whimsey project.  our day to spend time with a book.

moving right along with the thomas cahill, hinges of history series, i am now reading volume six: heretics and heroes.  thus far i have read about all the great artists of the pre-reformation era; donatello, verrocchio, leonardo, masolino, masaccio, francesca, botticelli, michelangelo, caravaggio and bernini.  to read about all of these artists in the context of their era, their time in history became a more cohesive whole. the most important characteristic of the art is that it defines the culture as is and also moves the culture forward.

trivia tuesday

trivia tuesday at the whimsey project!  our day to share all manner of trivia.  we have categories:
*NOT SOMETHING YOU SEE EVERY DAY! unusual experiences
*YOU DID NOT!  experiences shared with others and they do not believe you.
*what's in a name?  a person's surname and profession match.
*i read somewhere....    something interesting read but can't remember where.
*internet fun.  neat stuff read on the internet.
*general trivia.
*your category.  help us begin a new category of trivia.

my trivia is in the NOT SOMETHING YOU SEE EVERY DAY! category.  it's not unusual to see mama kitties with their kittens; it's expected. more unusual is to see a male cat taking an active role as daddy to their kittens. smudge is one such daddy cat.  he spends most of his day divided between the current crop of seven kittens.  when the kittens were in both the front of the house and the back of the house, he would divide his time between the two groups. now that the mamas have somewhat brought their broods together, smudge can daddy them all at the same time.  it's cute and sweet to see the kittens flopped on or playing all over on daddy cat, smudge.  what a guy!  curiously, when i realized this was happening was on father's day!

solitude sunday

solitude sunday at the whimsey project.  our day to spend time with a book.

the thomas cahill series, hinges of history, have been so engrossing that i have been reading almost every day throughout the week. accordingly, i am now reading volume five, mysteries of the middle ages. in this work, i finally find myself on somewhat familiar ground.  the mysteries of the middle ages marks the historical event of the merging of judeo-christian and greco-roman cultures to create a singular western civilization. one important feature of note for me is how artists of the middle ages left the greek ideal behind and created an art form that was truly their own. depictions in all forms of art went from cool, sleek, distant to warm, full, accessible.

whimsical wednesday

it's splurge day for whimsical wednesday! to splurge is to indulge. that means do something or get something you wouldn't usually do or have. like flowers? get yourself a bouquet! have a favorite latte but never have it? have one today? want to go somewhere but haven't made it? go today! whatever suits you, indulge!

my splurge for whimsical wednesday is two-fold.  first, i ordered a mystery art challenge kit for libby and i enjoy together when she comes home. this splurge requires delayed gratification! in the meantime, after completing this post, i will spend the rest of the day working in my art journal. no chores or musts today! just art and perhaps a bit of reading.

how did you splurge (indulge) this whimsical wednesday? share!

in the NOT SOMETHING YOU SEE EVERY DAY (or possibly YOU DID NOT!) category: sunday i was sitting on the porch with the dog and most of the cats when two giant tom turkeys strolled into the yard. they were pecking at the corn i scatter in the grass for assorted critters. one of the turkeys came upon a mushroom (fungus? toadstool?), sniffed at it, then gobbled (no pun intended) it in one bite!

solitude sunday

solitude sunday at the whimsey project.  our day to spend time with a book.

having completed the volume about the greeks, today i began the fifth volume of thomas cahill's hinges of history series; mysteries of the middle ages.  thus far i am still in ancient greece and rome as prelude to how the greco-roman civilization made the way possible for the middle ages to occur.  cahill discusses how the romans became italians and how the greeks and romans formalized christianity.  it's great how each volume of this series builds upon each other by way of a recap/introduction into the main topic of each book.  it's so much more of a learning experience.

solitude sunday

solitude sunday at the whimsey project.  our day to spend time with a book.

thomas cahill's, sailing the wine dark sea; why the greeks matter, is the fourth volume in the hinges of history series.  after reading about one-half of the book, i have discovered much about the greeks. the greeks went from being a nation that valued competition and all manner of military undertakings over all else. curiously, however, they also loved poetry.  the poetry of the greeks told stories about aspects of greek culture, the people they revered.  poetry was not read as much as spoken. elaborate stagings of poetry, with thousands attending, the foundation of modern theater was formed.

solitude sunday

solitude sunday at the whimsey project.  our day to spend time with a book.  any book you have long wanted to read; pick it up and enjoy today, for an hour or fifteen minutes!

my book is the fourth in thomas cahill's hinges of history series:  sailing the wine-dark sea; why the greeks matter. thus far i have read about helen of troy and the face that launched a thousand ships, the trojan horse, why honor in all things especially matter and how much the greeks cared for each other and family. in the eighth century before christ, the alphabet that we know and use today began by the greeks.  they took hebrew and hieroglyphs and pictographs; blending these together with symbols they created to better express their thoughts.  not knowing much about the ancient greeks, this is a slow read for me as i am working at understanding. just the type of reading i enjoy!
