solitude sunday

solitude sunday at the whimsey project.  our day to spend time with a book; especially those that have been sitting on the shelf waiting to be read.

american vision: the epic history of art in america by robert hughes has been completed! the final discussion was about the art of the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. this means andy warhol and other moderists. the art of the times were in the schools of abstract expressionism, abstract, performance, minimalism, earth art and constructivism.  during the 1980s, art became a commodity that the world had never before experienced.  pieces were selling for millions and millions of dollars, which profoundly changed the way art was acquired.  and now, it's time to begin another book!

silly saturday

it's silly saturday at the whimsey project! our day to share nonsense, jokes, funny experiences to make us grin, giggle, guffaw!

jacob had an unusual experience while walking in the woods thanksgiving weekend. it was very wet and muddy from the snow so walking conditions were tricky in places.  he found himself in one such place having stepped, then sank, into the boggy mud up to his thighs! he got himself freed from the suction of the mud only to leave his boot three feet under. he returned to the house cold, wet, muddy, and half barefoot!  after we got over the initial shock of his appearance and the situation, we all had a good laugh.  he had a hot shower.

share your funny, experiences, nonsense to make us grin, giggle, guffaw for silly saturday!

solitude sunday

solitude sunday at the whimsey project. our day to spend time with a book.

there's more history read than awaits for robert hughes' american visions: the epic history of art in america because i have made it from the 1930s to the 1950s. during the great depression the federal government funded programs to keep artists working, just as there were programs to keep construction workers working. design as art of structures, transportation systems and daily items came to the fore after world war two.  abstract art rose to prominence during the 1950s, featuring such artists as jackson pollack, john graham and willem de kooning. arshile gorky was considered to be the best of the abstract artists.

solitude sunday

solitude sunday at the whimsey project. our day to spend time with a book.

my journey through, robert hughes' american visions: the epic history of art in  america, continues. i'm definitely making progress with this very thick book as i'm actually really about the 20th century.
a few tidbits i've learned:
*the 1925 exposition des arts decoratifs in paris brought forth the last universal decorating style. know everywhere as art deco.
*hugh ferriss was a trained architect however spent most of his career rendering the designs of other architects.  his drawings of proposed buildings were, themselves, works of art.
*polar opposites in style and sensibility, the painters edward hopper and jackson pollock were the most original american painters.

solitude sunday

solitude sunday at the whimsey project.  our day to spend time with a book.

american visions: the epic history of art in america by robert hughes continues with the modern art era.  rejected by most, the style created quite an impact on american art.  artists of note during this time?  georgia o'keeffe and alfred stieglitz.  besides being powerful in the art culture, they were married! georgia o'keeffe became the most important woman of american art and remains so to this day. the end of the chapter on modernism discussed frank lloyd wright's influence on architecture.

solitude sunday

solitude sunday at the whimsey project. our day to spend time with a book.  any book will do, however, pay attention to those books that have been resting on the shelves for a long time waiting for you!

american visions: the epic history of art in america by robert hughes continues for me.  it appears that i have read about one half of the volume; having read about the late 1800s this morning.  the artists who caught my attention from this time of the gilded age was william harnett and john fredrick peto. amid all the over abundance of the first wave of machine made products, harnett and peto painted retrospectives that contain very few items, all of them relevant to the past and meaningful in political or social aspects.  the form the paintings take is that of a bulletin board or letter rack or wall. the paintings are so realistic it's difficult to accept they works aren't bulletin boards or letter racks or walls.

having a houseful of cats, ranging in ages from 18 years to 6 weeks old, brings endless silliness. this week, the lone dog was playing what appeared to be tag with the three kittens.  oh the cavorting! their game had me laughing out loud.
