solitude sunday

solitude sunday at the whimsey project. our day to spend time with a book. any book will do, however, pay particular attention to those books that have been waiting on the shelf for awhile.

grandmother's garden:  the old-fashioned american garden (1865-1915) by may brawley hill continues.  the late 1800s and the early 1900s brought the arts and crafts movement to the fore. this perion afforded women the opportunity to earn money through their talents in the arts and crafts. crafts included the crafting of homes, thus the craftsman style in architecture. the leading gardening magazines published articles detailing the type of grandmother's garden that would be the perfect match for the new craftsman homes.  it is during this period that garden plans included vegetables amid the flowers.

silly saturday

silly saturday at the whimsey project! our day to share lots of silly stuff to make us grin, giggle, guffaw!

yesterday, while doing taxes, i watched the movie "caged" on turner classic movie channel. this film noir, directed by john cromwell, received academy awards nominations. caged starred eleanor parker, agnes moorehead, ellen corby and hope emerson. so serious and dramatic! the synopsis presented on the channel guide?  "an innocent lands in a women's prison with crude inmates and a big matron called evelyn".  really?  really!  what a guffaw that provoked.

share your silly with us for silly saturday to make us grin, giggle, guffaw!

kathy shared the following link; the antics of a cat.  you will guffaw and guffaw watching this video:

solitude sunday

solitude sunday at the whimsey project. our day to spend time with a book.  any book will do, however, consider reading books that have been waiting to be read for a long time.

the chapters i read of grandmother's garden: the old-fashioned american garden (1865-1915) by may brawley hill were most enjoyable. mostly there were plates of paintings of gardens.  the thill arrived when i encountered a painting that i've actually seen in a museum.  there are several paintings in te book that i would really enjoy seeing in museums!

silly saturday

silly saturday at the whimsey project! our day to share silly stuff to make us grin, giggle, guffaw!

a long story very short; the results of a root canal this week were anything but silly. thanks to my friend, kathy, who rescued me from certain dental doom, i was able to react to the following with humor.  the post-operative instruction sheet stated that the patient should continue to brush and floss teeth per routine.  wow!  my reaction to that bit of information was to guffaw, ruefully!  brush and floss my teeth?!  in the mouth i can't open?! banging on the teeth that wish to be left alone?!  nope! at least i could actually laugh but it made my mouth and teeth hurt!

share your silly with us on silly saturday.  make us grin, giggle, guffaw!

whimsical wednesday

it's whimsical wednesday and we are celebration national mail carriers' appreciation day! surprise your mail carrier with a treat.  something as simple as a note (not in an envelope as they might mistaken it for outgoing mail) or grander like a gift card.  anything will do because everyone appreciates being appreciated!

this morning a cute treat bag, covered in smiley faces, was filled with two huge blueberry muffins. and a note of appreciation; on a homemade note card!  now it's in the mailbox (with the flag up) awaiting the arrival of the mail carrier to find her surprise!  film at eleven!

how did you appreciate your mail carrier today for whimsical wednesday? share!

trivia tuesday

trivia tuesday at the whimsey project.  our day to share all manner of trivia. personal trivia is especially welcome because that trivia springs from experiences.

yesterday was grandson, jacob's, 12th birthday.  yes, he's a groundhog day baby. there was a blizzard sunday into monday leaving about 19 inches of snow on the ground.  he went to bed hoping there would be no school on his birthday!  what a birthday gift he got!  no school!  this is exciting enough for a boy, however, it's only half of the story.  yesterday's day off comes 4 years to the day of another such event.  jacob wishing a blizzard would keep him out of school on his birthday and it happened! twice in his short years no school on his birthday due to a blizzard!  this event reminds me of nephew, matthew.  when he was a lad he always checked the coin return slots in vending machines.  his success rate for finding money in the slots was nearly 100%.  not something(s) that happen every day!

what say you? share your trivia this trivia tuesday!

solitude sunday

solitude sunday at the whimsey project. our day to spend time with a book.

a quote from may brawley hill's grandmother's garden: the old-fashioned american garden 1865-1915 that i enjoyed reading today:  "when i see one of the old english flowers grown of those days, blooming now in my garden, from an unbroken chain of blossom to seed of nearly three centuries, i thank the flower for all that its forebears did to comfort my forebears and i cherish it with added tenderness".  (historian alice earle)
