solitude sunday

solitude sunday at the whimsey project. our day to spend time with a book.

there's more history read than awaits for robert hughes' american visions: the epic history of art in america because i have made it from the 1930s to the 1950s. during the great depression the federal government funded programs to keep artists working, just as there were programs to keep construction workers working. design as art of structures, transportation systems and daily items came to the fore after world war two.  abstract art rose to prominence during the 1950s, featuring such artists as jackson pollack, john graham and willem de kooning. arshile gorky was considered to be the best of the abstract artists.

what are you reading? share your book with the whimsey project.
