the current topic i'm reading in robert hughes' american visions, the epic history of art in america, is about art in nature. prominent in the discussion, john james audubon, the naturalist painter who produced the most elegant book about birds of america ever produced. landscape painters of recognition included cole, church, lane, heade and kensett, one of the founders of new york's metropolitan museum of art.
