whimsical wednesday

we are visiting national parks for whimsical wednesday! no. we can't visit in person but we can virtually. best of all we can actually earn passport stamps for taking a virtual tour.  we will begin to explore our national parks today and those interested in more may continue through the summer and beyond.  i am making this adventure a summer project and collect passports!  if you visit a park, share which one and what you enjoyed about it with the whimsey project.

are you keeping a daily whimsical moments notebook? if not, today is a great day to begin! what is a daily whimsical moments notebook? it is any system you determine to use (notebook, calendar, daily planner) in which to record a moment or moments of something that caught your attention; the moment made you laugh, smile, think, wonder; it stands out for you as whimsically awesome.

from time to time we share a recorded whimsical moment or two.
here are a few from my daily whimsical moments notebook:
*april 12: two chicks hatched; on easter!
*may 10: the first rose of the season bloomed; on mother's day!

share moments from your daily whimsical moments notebook with the whimsey project.

whimsical wednesday

whimsical wednesday! we will be participating in national "donate a day's wages to charity" day.  it is most appropriate that all of us do something to help in any way possible during the global pandemic.  if you are retired and no longer work for a day's wage or it would hurt you financially to donate a day's wage, donate whatever is possible.  if you have received the federal government support check, use part of that to help support others.  of course, to whom you donate is your choice.

my donations were to:

the local food pantry, a member of the feeding america network:

the volunteer organization that makes masks for those who are in need, especially health care and other essential workers:

whimsical wednesday

here we are at the first wednesday of may, which means we learn something new for whimsical wednesday.  my "lessons" with learning the ukulele have come to an end (a borrowed instrument that was returned) so my learn something new activity will focus on something else.  for awhile i have thought to try my hand at making meringue cookies.  unless something else diverts my attention,  cookies it will be.

later...

meringue cookie making was an interesting experience. couldn't find the beaters for the mixer. someone must have "helped" me while visiting and moved them to who knows where. there was plenty of eggs but i discovered i had no cream of tartar. searching for a substitution, i learned acid, such as vinegar or citrus juice, would do. and in searching further discovered that many recipes don't use acid or cream of tartar at all.

the first batch of eggs cracked became an omelet because some of the yoke of one of the eggs got into the whites. (after the cookies went into the oven i made and enjoyed the omelet.) with no mixer to speed the whipping process, i sat myself in front of a television program and whisked away until the egg whites were at the soft peak stage.  i added almond extract for flavor.  with no piping bag blobs of meringue was plopped on the cookie sheets with a spoon. the blobs weren't pretty or elegant like the recipe photos but it was fine for a learning experience. note: future meringue cookies will also be blobs as the will be no purchasing of a piping bag. i am just not committed to using a piping bag for anything much less cookies i may never bake again.

the baking went well and the cookies tasted great. after awhile, however, the cookies became soft and felt wet.  problem? didn't bake long enough. still i was pleased with the first attempt at meringue cookies.  in searching for the recipe i discovered one for chocolate chewy meringue cookies.  now those, which do not require a piping bag, are on the list of recipes to try.

from hello giggles:

cinco de mayo means the fifth of may and commemorates the victory of the mexican army over french forces at the battle of puebla. while the town of puebla, mexico, observes cinco de mayo, most of the rest of mexico does not. the celebration as we know it actually began in los angeles, california, in the 1060s. now, a celebration of mexican culture, americans consume more than 80 million pounds of avocados on cinco de mayo.

our 2020 time capsule of fun, special, interesting events and experiences could be quite thin in this time of self-isolation.  however, we can still fill that capsule. think of the fun, special, interesting experiences you are having at home or with others via electronic connections. think of the 2020 time capsule as the daily whimsical moment notebook expanded!  for instance, you could have a video chat with someone that really made your day. that connection could be recorded on paper (date and persons involved) then placed in the time capsule. or a card or letter might arrive in your mailbox that really touched you. or you spent time creating some way to lift the spirits of others. doing that is a very special event. just because we aren't "going places" doesn't mean we aren't having experiences to remember on new year's eve 2020 or new year's day 2021!
