solitude sunday

solitude sunday at the whimsey project.  our day to spend time with a book.

moving right along with the thomas cahill, hinges of history series, i am now reading volume six: heretics and heroes.  thus far i have read about all the great artists of the pre-reformation era; donatello, verrocchio, leonardo, masolino, masaccio, francesca, botticelli, michelangelo, caravaggio and bernini.  to read about all of these artists in the context of their era, their time in history became a more cohesive whole. the most important characteristic of the art is that it defines the culture as is and also moves the culture forward.

trivia tuesday at the whimsey project!  our day to share all manner of trivia.  we have categories:
*NOT SOMETHING YOU SEE EVERY DAY! unusual experiences
*YOU DID NOT!  experiences shared with others and they do not believe you.
*what's in a name?  a person's surname and profession match.
*i read somewhere....    something interesting read but can't remember where.
*internet fun.  neat stuff read on the internet.
*general trivia.
*your category.  help us begin a new category of trivia.

my trivia is in the NOT SOMETHING YOU SEE EVERY DAY! category.  it's not unusual to see mama kitties with their kittens; it's expected. more unusual is to see a male cat taking an active role as daddy to their kittens. smudge is one such daddy cat.  he spends most of his day divided between the current crop of seven kittens.  when the kittens were in both the front of the house and the back of the house, he would divide his time between the two groups. now that the mamas have somewhat brought their broods together, smudge can daddy them all at the same time.  it's cute and sweet to see the kittens flopped on or playing all over on daddy cat, smudge.  what a guy!  curiously, when i realized this was happening was on father's day!

solitude sunday

solitude sunday at the whimsey project.  our day to spend time with a book.

the thomas cahill series, hinges of history, have been so engrossing that i have been reading almost every day throughout the week. accordingly, i am now reading volume five, mysteries of the middle ages. in this work, i finally find myself on somewhat familiar ground.  the mysteries of the middle ages marks the historical event of the merging of judeo-christian and greco-roman cultures to create a singular western civilization. one important feature of note for me is how artists of the middle ages left the greek ideal behind and created an art form that was truly their own. depictions in all forms of art went from cool, sleek, distant to warm, full, accessible.

it's splurge day for whimsical wednesday! to splurge is to indulge. that means do something or get something you wouldn't usually do or have. like flowers? get yourself a bouquet! have a favorite latte but never have it? have one today? want to go somewhere but haven't made it? go today! whatever suits you, indulge!

my splurge for whimsical wednesday is two-fold.  first, i ordered a mystery art challenge kit for libby and i enjoy together when she comes home. this splurge requires delayed gratification! in the meantime, after completing this post, i will spend the rest of the day working in my art journal. no chores or musts today! just art and perhaps a bit of reading.

solitude sunday

solitude sunday at the whimsey project.  our day to spend time with a book.

having completed the volume about the greeks, today i began the fifth volume of thomas cahill's hinges of history series; mysteries of the middle ages.  thus far i am still in ancient greece and rome as prelude to how the greco-roman civilization made the way possible for the middle ages to occur.  cahill discusses how the romans became italians and how the greeks and romans formalized christianity.  it's great how each volume of this series builds upon each other by way of a recap/introduction into the main topic of each book.  it's so much more of a learning experience.

solitude sunday

solitude sunday at the whimsey project.  our day to spend time with a book.

thomas cahill's, sailing the wine dark sea; why the greeks matter, is the fourth volume in the hinges of history series.  after reading about one-half of the book, i have discovered much about the greeks. the greeks went from being a nation that valued competition and all manner of military undertakings over all else. curiously, however, they also loved poetry.  the poetry of the greeks told stories about aspects of greek culture, the people they revered.  poetry was not read as much as spoken. elaborate stagings of poetry, with thousands attending, the foundation of modern theater was formed.

solitude sunday

solitude sunday at the whimsey project.  our day to spend time with a book.  any book you have long wanted to read; pick it up and enjoy today, for an hour or fifteen minutes!

my book is the fourth in thomas cahill's hinges of history series:  sailing the wine-dark sea; why the greeks matter. thus far i have read about helen of troy and the face that launched a thousand ships, the trojan horse, why honor in all things especially matter and how much the greeks cared for each other and family. in the eighth century before christ, the alphabet that we know and use today began by the greeks.  they took hebrew and hieroglyphs and pictographs; blending these together with symbols they created to better express their thoughts.  not knowing much about the ancient greeks, this is a slow read for me as i am working at understanding. just the type of reading i enjoy!

turkeys! turkeys! turkeys! suddenly there are turkeys in the yard all the time! a few days ago i was sitting on the screened porch when two tom turkeys strolled across the lawn. they were after the corn i throw in the grass for the birds and raccoon. as they pecked away i watched. burlap kitty was on the porch as well. soon they caught her attention and she watched, enchanted, for as long as they were in the yard.  a photo of that scene, kitty spying turkeys, became yesterday's photo friday! if the turkeys aren't pecking the grass in the front of the house, they are pecking the grass behind the house at the bird feeding station.  silly turkeys.

the kittens have now all been moved to porches. mama one moved her three to the screened porch (a hole in the screen allows access).  mamas two and three moved their four kittens to the back porch. the world grows larger for the seven newbies. they are all romping and playing and exploring now. when they sleep, they sleep in a heap. it makes me laugh to see them piled on each other.

the scent of honeysuckle is strong in the air; fragrant and heady. the lightning bugs are active. the frogs are croaking. the birds singing. the insects chirping. the fish jumping. the turtles sunbathing. oh! the glories of spring as summer approaches.

solitude sunday

solitude sunday at the whimsey project.  our day to spend time with a book; any book for as long as you have time to devote to it.

last sunday night i finished the second in thomas cahill's hinges of history series, the gifts of the jews. not wishing to wait to begin volume three, i began to read immediately. this volume, desire of the everlasting hills; the world before and after jesus, was amazing. i write was because i finished it today. mr cahill offers a history of the world leading up to the birth of jesus to begin the book. this foundation made such an impact on the discussion of the life of jesus. so much more context that allowed for greater understanding. after jesus the discussion turned to how the jews that believed in jesus as the messiah broke from those that did not to form the christian faith. intertwined throughout the volume is how the scriptures are presented, how they relate to one another, the historical factors, the authors of the books of what became the bible. wow! time for volume four.....

my post is being written on the porch.  waif doggie and the many cats are enjoying the pleasant weather. it's a lovely porch sitting day and has been all week.  every day we have been on the porch for at least a while. they lounge, snooze, the dog barks at whatever, the kitties come and go.  i read and observe what is going on in the world known as bairn tangle farm, home.  there is currently a turkey pecking at corn in the lawn just a few feet from the porch. it's so neat to see turkeys up close.

last night before dark i added food to the hummingbird feeders. encountered mama raccoon in the front. when she discovered me she scurried up the nearest tree and peeked around the trunk at me. since i paid her no mind and left her alone, she continued to watch me. this is the mama that has her kits close by each season because there's a food source. one year i began to feed her because she was destroying the bird feeders to get to food. she wasn't going away, i wasn't going to remove her so i just started feeding her. and the kits as soon as they are weened. every year i anticipate seeing the kits in the yard. none thus far this year. it won't be long.

one of the kitties just walked across the lawn toward the lake, passing by ms turkey. the turkey looked somewhat startled. however the kitty went about her business so the turkey continued her lunch.

there were three expecting kitties this spring. after they were all "empty" the kittens of two of the mamas were discovered readily. where was the third mama housing her kittens? a few days ago, by chance, they were revealed! she had them in the herb garden, full now with vegetation, as well as a sculpture base to rest behind without being seen from the sidewalk or lawn.  this area is just outside my bathroom window; that i peeked out of at just the right time to see three very wee kittens: one gray, one burlap, one yellow. now i look out of the window several times a day and say hi to them.  they just stare at this big thing in wonderment.

the other four kittens are older and venturing around the playhouse lawn. i've been sitting on the bench in that area to allow them to get used to me. they are curious but only one has come as close as a foot within reach. just looking and occasionally talking to them. they are seeing their mamas come to be on me, by me so they must know i'm not too scary!

the hummingbird population count has been established at three.  that's one more than usual. perhaps a few more will join the others.  when i sit on the bench to be near the kittens i am directly under one of the hummingbird feeders. since i remain still they come to the feeder. they hum loudly and are so neat to watch up close. i've gotten good at tracking them as they zoom about from tree to tree and around the house and each other.

ms turkey has finished her lunch and has moved on so i will end for this miscellaneous day at the whimsey project.  pay attention to the nature around you. it fulfills like nothing else.

it's national salad week and we are seeking different ingredients for our rabbit food for whimsical wednesday!  use this link to discover different wild plants that are edible and would make tasty for a tasty salad:

http://wowthatscool.com/-meetanimal/wild-plants-you-might-not-have-known-you-could-eat?utm_content=bufferecc74&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_campaign=buffer

armed with the list of plants from the above link, i was out early this morning hunting wild, edible plants. it was relatively simple to find dandelion greens, plantains and wild onions as they readily grow in the not very pristine grass.  the day lilies aren't up as yet and the spring beauties have come and gone. the rest of the plants on the list are either too far afield for me or don't grow here. not being too keen on salad for breakfast, the edibles have been washed and put in the refrigerator until lunch. the taste test results will be reported later.

it would have been need to find the wood sorrel or the sheep sorrel as they have the taste of lemon; one of my favorite flavors! also, recently i read in the wildflower book that may apples, or berries as they are technically referred to, are edible as well! these also have a citrus flavor. now that i know i shall endeavor to find and try!

solitude sunday

solitude sunday at the whimsey project.  our day to spend time with a book; any book you would enjoy reading or are enjoying reading.  a new book or a long awaited read.

my journey with the second volume of thomas cahill's hinges of history books, the gifts of the jews, how the tribe of desert nomads changed the way everyone thinks and feels.  thus far the hebrews, who became isrealites, have been wandering in the desert and have come to make themselves a home in canaan. during a succession of kings, the greatest of these, david, the israelites are finally vanquished by the assyrians. the ten lost tribes of the isrealites are scattered and are gone from the historical record.  and that's what i've read so far.

rain, rain, rain.  a week of rain. and chilly.  no porch sitting currently.

the four wee kittens are all romping about the playhouse now.  one could imagine it's their house and they are playing outside.  two yellow, one calico, one brindled; so cute they are.

mama and papa goose are rearing their gosling with great care.  as a result the little one is thriving. so big already!

lady raccoon wasn't happy with me this week.  with all the rain (and i mean ALL the rain) i didn't go out as much with food for the birds. when i feed the birds, i have food for the raccoon. she got me.  she tore up one of the bird feeders but good. there is now food out for both the raccoon and the birds.

two hummingbirds.  they zoom and chase each other away from the feeders. i wonder if the nectar tastes better with antics included. they have discovered the hummingbird vine next to the side door. oh, the choices! where to begin!

while sitting on the porch last sunday, a bird's song caught my attention. it was lovely and reminded me of the beginning notes of a classical music piece. although these notes were the bird's song, i half expected the rest of the symphony to unfold.

our whimsical wednesday activity of taking a chance update: i replanted the failing african violet transplant from mom.  the replants are limping along.  i haven't given up as yet.

in the NOT SOMETHING YOU SEE EVERY DAY! category:  i watched a pair of cardinals sitting opposite one another, munch cracked corn at the tray bird feeder. it was as if they were dining at a restaurant or a kitchen table. suddenly the female leaned toward the male and gave him a bit of her food; the exchange beak to beak. soon after, he shared a bite with her. they chattered and ate and shared. it was sweet.

solitude sunday

solitude sunday at the whimsey project.  our day to spend time with a book; any book but those especially that rests on our bookshelves that we have been meaning to read.

my reading session was later today as i had out of town company this weekend. when i could settle down to read, i was able to finish thomas cahill's, how the irish saved civilization; the untold story of ireland's heroic role from the fall of rome to the rise of medieval europe.  this volume is the first in cahill's, hinges of history series.  the remaining few chapters described how ireland became diminished through invasions, famine and mass emigration. however, it was concluded, that the irish gave so much to the world, through the fall of rome and dark ages, that nothing could diminish this land and it's people.

miscellaneous

the late april warming was encouraging. with the advent of may, however, came cold and rain. the porch will have to wait.

house wrens are, once again, building a nest in the gourd birdhouse next to the dining room window. as i discovered last year, after they abandoned the gourd, wrens prepare several nests then select the one that best suits.  maybe they will deem the gourd birdhouse worthy this season.

the may apples are blooming. soon there will be apples. may apples are wildflowers. the plant resembles a wee umbrella as the stalk is straight with a circle of large leaves atop. the blossom appears directly under the leaves and is replaced by a small green globe that's known as the apple.  they are very whimsical.

so many turkeys about. it must be the season because i caught sight of a male in full display yesterday. he was so proud of all those feathers fanning out behind him.

the blossoms on the flowering trees are larger and fuller.  so many dogwood trees clustered together looks like snow on the branches.  interspersed with the red bud trees, the vista is striking.

whimsical wednesday

we're playing history detectives for whimsical wednesday. the catalyst? a product from the kitchen that has the company's founding date on the package.  for example, kikkoman soy sauce since 1066.  after the date has been determined, do a web search of web search for events that happened in that year (1066 in our example).

in my kitchen cupboard i grabbed a bag of chocolate chips.  the brand is ghirardelli. according to the banner on the package, the ghirardelli chocolate company was founded in 1852.  my history searched focused on that year, 1852.  here's what i learned:

*1852 was a leap year.
*uncle tom's cabin by harriett beecher stowe was published.
*the netherlands issued postage stamps for the first time.
*napoleon became emperor of france.
*the uncle sam cartoon made his debut in the new york lantern weekly.
*roget's thesaurus, first edition, was published.
*both loyola college (america) and university of sydney (australia) were founded.
*the flaked cereal industry began with john kellogg's corn flakes.
*emma snodgrass was arrested in boston for wearing pants!

what history did you discover looking in your kitchen cupboards or refrigerator this whimsical wednesday?

solitude sunday

solitude sunday at the whimsey project! our day to spend time with a book.  pull a book off the bookshelf that you have been meaning to read for awhile now. devote as much time as you wish to your book.

i began a new book this week. the first in a series, the hinges of history, by thomas cahill.  i'm reading volume one, entitled, how the irish saved civilization; the untold story of ireland's heroic role from the fall of rome to the rise of medieval europe.

it's difficult to select standout details in such a book.  it's all so woven together that there's not one fact that can be pointed to as more important or interesting than another fact.  what is wonderful about this book, this series, is mr cahill delves into those aspects of history that has gotten little to no attention.  reading this slim volume, i'm learned so much about the greco/roman civilizations, the history of ireland and how fascinating the irish people were (are?). i've learned how patrick, a kidnapped member of nobility in roman britian and made slave in ireland, became st patrick.  one of the most important historical figures for ireland, he set the stage for ireland's progression from barbarians to a learned, sophisticated civilization.  a civilization that saved world civilization.  how? by saving the written word from all over the world.

the leaves of trees are bursting forth.  everything is suddenly greener! the dogwood and redbud trees are blooming so there's vivid white and red amid the bright green.

the hummingbird feeders were hung this week in preparation for the arrival of those wee friends.  first hummingbird sighting this morning!  oh, how i love the hummingbirds.  zip and zoom time!

kittens! we have kittens.  three of the outdoor kitties were full in figure and now they aren't.  i knew there were babies but didn't know where they were.  waif doggie sniffed out some of them, close to the house. i peeked at them and thought, "oh, i don't want more kittens!! aren't they cute!?"

the screened porch is tidy and ready for guests.  come sit a spell.  we'll have tea.  hot or iced, with or without lemon, whichever you prefer!

whimsical wednesday

it's national "take a chance" day for whimsical wednesday!  take a chance on something, anything, great or small.

i took a chance this whimsical wednesday.  i took a chance on saving a transplanted african violet.  a transplant from mom's main african violet was brought home in january.  it did well enough, slowly re-establishing itself in new soil, in a new pot, in a new environment. then i was gone for more than a month helping mom after her fall. in the meantime, unable to tend the transplant, it languished.  when i got home i was sad it was limping along but watered it and hoped for the best. today i took the transplant from the pot and removed all the withered leaves.  that left two obvious starts of a few green, supple leaves.  those were divided and planted in two separate pots. after getting a drink of water the "new" plants were returned to the shelf under the sun room window. just seeing them, looking hopeful, made me glad i took a chance on saving the transplanted african violet for whimsical wednesday.  film at eleven!

what did you take a chance on for whimsical wednesday? share!

trivia tuesday at the whimsey project! our day to share all manner of trivia.  we have several categories and invite you to share your own category:
*general trivia, fun facts and interesting tidbits.
*NOT SOMETHING YOU SEE EVERY DAY! the most unusual experiences.
*what's in a name? someone's surname that matches their profession.
*you did not! in which you relate an experience to others and they respond with YOU DID NOT! or are otherwise incredulous.

in the YOU DID NOT! category, my experiences in australia provoked this response on more than one occasion! we were in a forest hiking and i saw a koala sleeping in a tree. we were in a nature preserve and i held a koala. we were in the great barrier reef and i saw a purple star fish. i told australians that i saw a koala in the wild and they said YOU DID NOT! for it seems sightings in the wild are rare. after returning to america and shared all these experiences with friends at several opportunities and they all said YOU DID NOT! i did, australia and america. i really, really did!

happy easter!

happy easter!

solitude sunday

solitude sunday at the whimsey project.  our day to spend time with a book.  pull that book off the shelf that you've intended to read and do so; for however time you have to devote to reading

for christmas past i gifted my friend a book entitled a cup of comfort edited by colleen sell. the book is composed of personal experiences. the cover of the book reads:  "timeless stories that warm your heart, lift your spirit and enrich your life." she really enjoyed the book and told me more than once she wanted me to read the book as well. thinking it wouldn't come to that i didn't consider the possibility. however, she handed me the book last sunday, the first opportunity we had to see each other in several months. the look on her face to share this gift with me told me not to disappoint. i picked the book up on tuesday and read part of it. thursday i picked the book up and read more of it.

this morning i finished what remained which wasn't much. it was the perfect read for easter sunday. the personal stories of the authors were very touching and thoughtful.  two of the stories were my favorites. and, no surprise, they featured animals.  miracle fish. the mom somehow managed to, without her knowledge, drain the fish tank.  when it was discovered that the fish were in the dry tank the family assumed the fish were dead.  preparing for fishie funerals, water was put back in the tank so the fish would float to the top of the tank.  instead of floating, they began to move.  slowly at first but breathing and recovering. the family was so happy that they had miracle fish.  sing your song. the author of this story had a bird.  the birdie was out of the cage while she was running the vacuum cleaner. yes, as you imagined, somehow she managed to vacuum the bird into the machine! frantically she turned off the vacuum cleaner and tore into the bag.  there was her birdie! it popped out and flew to a perch and began to sing just as it was doing before it's remarkable adventure with the vacuum cleaner.  with this song, however, the birdie sang minus all of its feathers!

miscellaneous

the grass is dotted with splashes of yellow!  dandelions are everywhere, as yesterday's photo friday attests. either the grass is high or the stems of the dandelions are short because the blossoms are very close to the ground.  often they are nestled in the grass.  when i see them i think pats of butter! that causes me to giggle!

wee squirrels are romping about.  woodpeckers are hopping along tree trunks. birds, mostly cardinals, are flocking to the bird feeders.  watching the gold finches reminds me that it's time to cook sugar water to fill the hummingbird feeders. they will soon return.

the easter eggs begun on whimsical wednesday were completed on friday.  the eggs rested in the food color solution for two days and when they were removed beautiful blue eggs. the factor that thrilled the most, since i was working with natural substances, was the variations of how the different eggs accepted the food coloring dye. after the eggs dried i was tempted to leave them as they were because they were already beautiful.  however, i wanted to play so, using gold and silver metallic permanent markers, i made minimal geometric patterns on the eggs.  the designs were influenced by the dye patterns of each individual egg.  the results were pleasing.  my girls and grandchildren, having viewed the photos i sent them, approved.  well done easter eggs!

whimsical wednesday

it's whimsical wednesday and we're getting ready for easter.  it's an open-ended activity today as everyone will be doing whatever it is they do to prepare for their celebration.

for whimsical wednesday i made easter eggs; or at least began the preparation. what is different this year for easter egg dyeing is the method.  i'm always looking for new processes for traditional activities like dyeing easter eggs. i was excited to find a method i had never tried before. eggs are usually dyed with others, namely the grandchildren, so this passive method of dyeing easter eggs really wouldn't function well as a group activity.

after boiling a dozen eggs and cooling them in a bowl of cold water, they were transferred to a large bowl filled with blue food coloring (plus vinegar and water). the eggs will rest in the blue food coloring bath in the refrigerator overnight. tomorrow i will discover how deeply the blue food coloring dyed the eggs. if they aren't blue enough for me, they'll rest a bit longer. when they are the intensity of blue i'm working toward, out of the food coloring solution they'll come. from there the eggs will dry and then they can be embellished.

the best part of dyeing easter eggs, besides the pleasure of doing so, is the deviled eggs i make with the boiled eggs after easter.  yum!

how did you prepare for your easter celebration this whimsical wednesday?

solitude sunday

solitude sunday.  our day to spend time with a book.  we all have books on the shelf we have been meaning to read.  solitude sunday is the perfect opportunity to enjoy those books.  no time requirement, just enjoy reading.

my time with bill bryson's the mother tongue; english and how it got that way ended with today's session. the remaining chapters discussed names, swearing, wordplay (games with words) and the future of english.

bits that caught my attention:

*names:  macgillesheathenaich! a real surname.
*surnames came about based on profession or relation:  smith, as in blacksmith.  johnson, as in john's son.
*the japanese, the malayans, most polynesians and native american have no swear words in their languages.
*swear words evolve over time. what wasn't becomes and what is isn't. the euphemisms used for swear words are often silly or become a swear word themselves.
*since language began there has been wordplay.
*the crossword puzzle is the number word game. it first appeared in the new york world newspaper in 1913. the first volume of crossword puzzles was published in 1924 by simon and schuster.

next week i'll be discussing the next volume i stick my nose in. what are you reading? share your book with the whimsey project.

the turtles have awakened! they line the bank of the lake, basking in the sunshine. this morning i spied them floating, as if in formation! an impressive flotilla they indeed made.

the gold finches are busily munching at the nijer seed feeders.  it was neat to see at least a dozen pairs of cardinals enjoying the offerings at the other bird feeders.

wood ducks, canada geese, turkeys, the heron, the eagle all made appearances this week.  and many more spring bulb flowers.

it's so nice out that the dog doesn't want to be inside.  she only reluctantly comes in and only when i insist. it's time to get the screened porch tidy for the season of porch sitting is upon us!

whimsical wednesday

we're playing "what's in a name?" for whimsical wednesday!  what does your name mean? and if you could name yourself, what would that name be?

theresa.  that's me.  named for my paternal german grandmother. the name derives from the greek verb therizo, which means to harvest. not a very popular name for girls, it was the 852nd name of choice in 2008. it's probably 1000+ by now! in 1952, the decade i was born, it was the 65th most popular name for girls. of all the name variants listed on wikipedia, i liked the name in polish: tesa.

since monday, our get ready day for whimsical wednesday, i thought and thought and thought about the name i would like to have.  such an undertaking is difficult because names are not so easily derived for one, especially oneself!  after much pondering i settled on lauren. i've never felt like a theresa and don't know that i feel like a lauren.  however, lauren feels more like me than my given name (grandmother's name notwithstanding!). lauren comes from the latin, of laurentum, from the place of the laurel trees. the leaves of laurel trees (also known as bay leaves) were used to create victory crowns for athletic events.

what does your name mean?  what name would you like to have? share with us here at the whimsey project!

last whimsical wednesday was children's books day.  my favorite children's book was pippi longstockings by astrid lindgren. curious about the origins of the story, i read about pippi on the net.  in the old swedish language her name was pippi langstrump.  pippi meant quirky! her full name was pippilotta delicatessa windowshade mackrelmint ephraim's daughter langstrump.

solitude sunday

solitude sunday at the whimsey project.  our day to spend time with a book!

chapter twelve of bill bryson's the mother tongue, english and how it got that way discusses english as a world language. one language understood by the majority of the world's inhabitants helps everyone communicate more effectively with one another.  translations take much time and money.  translations often miss the intent of what is said.  businesses need language consistency to run efficiently. english words have found their way into general speech around the world.

my favorite bits:

*telephone is te le fung in china.
*the french go footing; not running or jogging.
*bacon is beikon in japan.
*seaspeak was developed by maritime authorities to keep words to a minimum for ships traversing waterways.  "say again" for repeat please.  "mistake" for error for examples.

home! home! home!  i've been home for almost one entire week.

being in tennessee then back on the farm has afforded me the opportunity to enjoy the coming of spring twice. i left tennessee having seen the spring bulbs bloom and arrived in illinois to watch them emerge here.

it appears that a few of the female kitties were busy while i was away.  they are expecting.  all kitties are accounted for except one.  hopefully she'll come home as i have called for her several times a day every day.

doggie got home from her doggie friends' house and made herself right at home. she remembered where her treats are!

wood ducks!  lots and lots of wood ducks have been visiting the farm's lake.  also the canada goose pair.

my friend kathy and i were in the driveway upon arrival last sunday evening. movement by the lake caught my attention.  as the heron took flight across the lake i said, "look! the heron!"   wow!  the heron was barely in the sky and i saw a huge bird almost overhead!  "look! the eagle!"  double wow!  such a welcome home!
