miscellaneous

the late april warming was encouraging. with the advent of may, however, came cold and rain. the porch will have to wait.

house wrens are, once again, building a nest in the gourd birdhouse next to the dining room window. as i discovered last year, after they abandoned the gourd, wrens prepare several nests then select the one that best suits.  maybe they will deem the gourd birdhouse worthy this season.

the may apples are blooming. soon there will be apples. may apples are wildflowers. the plant resembles a wee umbrella as the stalk is straight with a circle of large leaves atop. the blossom appears directly under the leaves and is replaced by a small green globe that's known as the apple.  they are very whimsical.

so many turkeys about. it must be the season because i caught sight of a male in full display yesterday. he was so proud of all those feathers fanning out behind him.

the blossoms on the flowering trees are larger and fuller.  so many dogwood trees clustered together looks like snow on the branches.  interspersed with the red bud trees, the vista is striking.

  1. I'm sure you are enjoying the late spring blossoms.
Many trees are now green, but some of the bushes are still flowering.
Gardens are being planted, or early plantings are being enjoyed--spinach, radishes, lettuce and onions. The peas won't be far behind.
The garden centers are busy since people are ready to be outside after the harsher than normal southern winter.

    1. spring in tennessee must be just as delightful as spring in southern illinois. wish i was enjoying some of that garden bounty! plants are slower here this year as well, after the harsh winter.
