solitude sunday

solitude sunday at the whimsey project.  our day to spend time with a book.

thomas cahill's, sailing the wine dark sea; why the greeks matter, is the fourth volume in the hinges of history series.  after reading about one-half of the book, i have discovered much about the greeks. the greeks went from being a nation that valued competition and all manner of military undertakings over all else. curiously, however, they also loved poetry.  the poetry of the greeks told stories about aspects of greek culture, the people they revered.  poetry was not read as much as spoken. elaborate stagings of poetry, with thousands attending, the foundation of modern theater was formed.

what are you reading! share your book with us here at the whimsey project.
