my journey with the second volume of thomas cahill's hinges of history books, the gifts of the jews, how the tribe of desert nomads changed the way everyone thinks and feels. thus far the hebrews, who became isrealites, have been wandering in the desert and have come to make themselves a home in canaan. during a succession of kings, the greatest of these, david, the israelites are finally vanquished by the assyrians. the ten lost tribes of the isrealites are scattered and are gone from the historical record. and that's what i've read so far.

last night i finished the gift of the jews. learned that the remaining group was in judah and this is how they became known as the jews. what gifts did we received from the jews with their unique (for ancient times) religion and relationship with one god? the concepts of: new, adventure, surprise, unique, individual, person, vocation, time, history, future, freedom, progress, spirit, faith, hope, justice. the foundation on which modern life is built.
