solitude sunday

solitude sunday at the whimsey project. our day to spend time with a book.  any book will do however visit those books that have been waiting on the shelf for a long time to be read. what are you reading? share your book and read about others.

how fortunate am i to have been loaned a wonderful book; the forest unseen (a year's watch in nature) by david george haskell. a biologist, haskell detailed the observation of a forest mandala for one year. a forest mandala is described as a circle a little over a meter across that borders a particular area of the forest.  once established, the mandala then allows for one to observe all that takes place in that tiny ecosystem within the broader environment. focusing on one small area allows for the acute observation not possible by looking at the whole.  the author visited his mandala several times a week for one year and the book is the result of his visits and observations.  instead of dull and dry as science would suggest, the writing is vivid.  one is transported to the place of haskell's forest mandala.
