grandmother's garden: the old-fashioned american garden (1865-1915) by may brawley hill is finished. in 1894, helena ely, determined that her garden should be thought of as a series of rooms, connected by paths and other structures.  this led to a new way of thinking about the moods and rhythm of the garden. as people moved east to west, traditional gardening ideas and techniques were taken along. however, it was soon discovered that what worked in one area of the country didn't work in other areas.  gardens in the midwest and the west soon reflected the vegetation and climate of those environments.
