travel over the weekend was very fruitful in the state license plate game department. the list of sighted plates grew to include nevada, new hampshire, iowa and wyoming. it was a hoot to spy new hampshire while driving through nashville instead of having spied it in the northeast during a recent visit there. it seemed we had spotted alabama when going south months ago, however, it hadn't been entered or dated on the list so when it came along this weekend, alabama was officially included as sighted. i can't remember if i declared somewhere on the whimsey project site that new york, new jersey and massachusetts have been seen.
it's very hot. licking sugar free fudgesicles like a little kid is one of the few pleasures of a very hot day!
should anyone have an idea for a whimsical wednesday activity, please share.

memorial day weekend was spent mostly on the screened porch. meals, tea, visiting, watching the activities everyone was involved in, enjoying sunrises, sunsets and the wildlife. so peaceful and relaxing; so "other" time and the world disappeared. each moment savored.

most days we have a set agenda and work diligently to accomplish the day's tasks. for me, some days are all about puttering. meandering through the day, giving attention to small details that are often ignored in the general routine of the house chores or just working on tasks that i want to do instead of what i must, gives the day the feel of a day off. beyond choosing what to do for a change in routine, at the end of the day, much more than expected has been completed. a day of puttering is a day of relaxation that one can feel good about that provides the added bonus of accomplishment.

whimsical wednesday!
wednesday is the day a friend and i have lunch. we eat at the same place every week and sit at the same table. since we are regulars, we have become friendly with the servers. with that in mind, planning for the JUST BECAUSE celebration for whimsical wednesday included them. a small basketful of heart shaped "ornaments" wrapped in a cloth the way a bread basket would be prepared and a small bright yellow smiley face balloon were taken to the restaurant.
when my friend saw me in the parking lot (yes, we park in the same area either next to or close to one another) she giggled at my armload of goodies, asking what i was up to this week! i just smiled. we enjoyed our lunch with the balloon (on a stick stuck in a paper cup) and basket decorating our table. we ate and talked and enjoyed our visit.
at the next table was two young boys with their mother and grandparents. they finished eating before we did. as they were leaving i held out the balloon to the younger boy and asked if he would like to have my balloon. his eyes grew wide and he nodded yes. as he took it from me he was asked to please share with his brother.
it was just before we prepared to leave that i told my friend it was JUST BECAUSE celebration day and that meant balloons and prizes. the basket was offered and she was invited to have one (three choices: red, green, blue). she was delighted as she selected her favorite color green. as we left we paused to offer a JUST BECAUSE celebration gift to all "our" regular servers. they were surprised, then excited to be able to select a heart just for them! we got hugs and thank yous.
light-hearted and grinning, i drove from the parking lot. at the stop sign i was behind a car with a license plate from the state of virginia; a state not yet sighted so could be added to our list. what a perfect way to end whimsical wednesday!

spring!
this sunday morning has dawned as the most wonderfully perfect spring day......
the sun is shining,
a gentle breeze is blowing,
the temperature just right,
wildflowers are blooming,
birds are chattering,
ducks are lazing on the lake,
the trees are full with bursts of green leaves.
the day is a poem!
sipping tea on the screened porch, savoring it all, creates a very special whimsey.

for the last few months it has seemed that the weather consists only of rain. rain means dark clouds and dreary, gloomy days. monday i awoke to sunshine. it was so bright and overwhelming i felt as if i had awakened some some place other than earth! and thought i needed sunglasses even in the house, so unaccustomed i had become to the brilliant light of the sun.
later in the morning, at the volunteer quilting group i work with, we commented on how wonderful it was to have the sun shine once again. one of the ladies remarked, "remember, the sun is always there; we just can't see it sometimes." how true that observation! it prompted me to think how often we think something in life is absent. however, if we pay attention we find that what we thought was missing has been there all the while.

whimsical wednesday!
in honor of national postcard week, postcards are being made this whimsical wednesday.
the morning began with making a pot of tea to sip while considering postcard making options. post tea and thinking, five postcards were created using a variety of colored card stock (a standard sheet of card stock, cut into four pieces, makes the perfect postcard). festive stickers were applied to the side that the note was written on. simple but lighthearted and certainly postal delivery friendly. the postcards are being sent to unsuspecting recipients. hopefully there will be responses!
a postcard stamp costs less than 30 cents. a stamped postcard can also be purchased for a few cents more. a very economical way to make someone happy when the mailbox yields a handwritten hi.

the first batch of ripe strawberries were picked yesterday! strawberry season is sooo wonderful; so rich in flavor and warm from the sun. yum! yum! after sampling a few, the rest are prepared for the freezer. when the grandchildren arrive for their late summer visit we will make jam. then strawberries will be enjoyed all winter as the homemade strawberry jam will remind us of spring.
the hummingbirds have returned. the two that have been observed are enjoying homemade nectar. if you'd like to attract hummingbirds to your landscape make nectar.
the recipe: one part sugar to four parts water. pour measured hot water over the sugar and stir until the sugar is dissolved. after the nectar cools, pour into any hummingbird feeder (these can be purchased rather inexpensively) not more than halfway full.
why only halfway? because more hummers will be attracted to the feeders if the nectar is changed often (be sure to wash the feeder before adding fresh nectar); especially when the temperature exceeds 80 degrees. giving them less per fill keeps the waste of nectar to a minimum.
begin with one or two feeders. hang them from a tree or by the house on a plant hook or get a feeder that attaches to a window with a suction cup. then enjoy the peace and whimsey of observing hummingbirds.

whimsical wednesday!
whimsical wednesday had participants trying something new. my efforts took many hours as trying to think of that something new occupied much of the morning. after a few false starts i decided to learn new crochet stitches. doing such usually isn't very pleasant for me as i find reading patterns and stitch directions difficult (that's why i typically make up my own!). however, this was the something new i decided upon and i was going to see it through. i fumbled with my attempts initially as i couldn't get myself situated with what to learn or how to learn it. finally i decided to create a small crocheted piece that would be a sampler of the different new stitches i was going to learn. and i began at the beginning of the "how to" of stitches in one my crochet books.
first came the row of chain stitches, the stitch that begins most crocheted pieces. then a row of single crochet between each row of the rest of the stitches. the first stitches, half double crochet (my favorite crochet stitch) and double crochet i already knew how to execute. from those rows i learned how to crochet the triple crochet, any stitch (i used the half double crochet) around the front of the stitch post, then around the back of the stitch post as well as stitches in the top front loop and the back top loop. the cluster crochet stitch, the popcorn crochet stitch and the puff crochet stitch finished the project.
when the last single crochet stitch was finished, i lifted the small sampler piece to examine and admire. big grin! collectively, i learned eight new stitches for my learn something new activity. some i had to do over and over again until i crocheted them correctly. i was quite pleased with my efforts and the results as my knowledge of crochet expanded today. my mom would be pleased too!

more license plate sightings from my recent travels to both new york city and chicago: connecticut, alaska (yes, alaska!) and arizona. we have seventeen more state license plates to sight and the entire united states will have been accounted for. we have also seen four canadian provinces. it's fun, a challenge and always exciting to see another new plate to add to the list. wonder if we'll manage to see a plate from hawaii.......

project whimsey in chicago
EMBODY: IT'S WHAT WE HAVE TO WORK WITH was performed by the LUNA TROOP dance company in chicago over the weekend. the whimsey project offered an opportunity for the audience to become active participants during the performance with the piece, BODYWORKS.
each member of the audience was given a card that depicted a muscle of the body and what area of the body that muscle was connected to. audience members then gathered on the dance floor and stood in the "correct" place to correspond with that of the body. after every body was in place and adjustments were made, photographs were taken. a portrait of a human body composed of bodies featuring the part of the body that helps the body work.....muscles!
(the whimsey project thanks the LUNA TROOP for being included in this performance......)

after arriving at my chicago destination yesterday early afternoon, i decided a walk on a lovely spring day was just what was needed to relax from the journey. out of the neighborhood to the nearest busy street i walked along. at a major intersection, i found myself amid lots of persons out for a walk on a lovely spring day just as i was. and, while waiting for the light to change so i could cross the street, i examined all the stores in the four blocks that bound the intersection of the street. what i found, in both building and human, was that they seemed to be from everywhere all over the world. as with new york city, such an environment is a living united nations; not just an idea or a building or an organization but actual life and all of us living it together. as much as the lovely spring day warmed and renewed me, so did finding variety in life that actually finds us all so similar there are no true differences.

whimsical wednesday
the whimsey project has arrived in chicago! whimsical wednesday was observed along the way. today's activity was to note nouns along the drive and to create new "names" with the found words. because the drive is long, 40 words were gathered (stopping once coming close to the city as driving becomes such that playing games isn't a very good idea! and 40 seemed a lot to work with). because there are lots of nouns, parameters were established; with the names of towns, counties or the names on 18 wheeler trucks being eligible for inclusion. the following was created after arriving at my destination:
mcgrif schiber
bradley bourbonnais
will renegade
hetzel manteno
buckley roberts
moc quast
paxton lagrou
beelman rantoul
heyl tiphook
dart gilman
chatsworth onarga
averitt mcnay
clifton iroquis
ashkum hapag
pontiac coles
dix chebanse
momence sherwin
salem n'dair
kankakee prime
arthur mattoon
would you like to have any of these names? i'm partial to mcgrif schiber, hetzel manteno, paxton lagrou, heyl tiphook and averitt mcnay. (actually i like them all!) it's neat how random words found along the road can be configured to create names that could belong to characters in books or movies or authors of paperbook books, like romance novels. giggle.......

rain, rain, rain! sooooooo much rain. my alternative means to walking this whimsical wednesday was such fun. i put on my knee high rain boots and tripped along the driveway (which is very long), splashing in the puddles. i skipped to the puddles then jumped into each with both feet and created excellent splashes! from the house to the mailbox and back to the house again, all of the puddles and i became well acquainted. when it's hot and dry this summer and i kick up dust as i walk along the driveway to the mailbox, i will think of this day.

i have not been well this week; suffering from a spring cold that has knocked me flat. although unwell isn't what anyone would think of as a good time, there are benefits when minor illness strikes. staying home from work or school gives an unplanned break from routine. the comforts of illness are many: family concern and attention, hot tea, soup, ice cream, favorite movies while blobbing on the couch, naps and no expectation that anything other than getting well is to be accomplished. none of these comforts are unique to illness as we have them otherwise as well. however, they are all the more special when they are offered as remedies for the restoration to health. and minor illness, if we pay attention, can remind us just how wonderful good health is and how we must take appropriate action to protect it.

this is my last morning in new york city. soon it will be time to catch the bus at central park west to make my way to laguardia for the return flight to chicago. new york city is a very whimsical city. everywhere one looks there's something to marvel at and, more often than not, be very surprised by. going "somewhere" in the city really isn't necessary to having a great time because just being in the city is entertaining. new york city is, contrary to popular belief, a very friendly place. from the moment i stepped off the plane to this moment commenting on my time here, residents have been so pleasant, kind and helpful. as a whole, i'm thinking, they have a lot of patience to put up with the constant stream of hapless tourists (who speak all languages!) that inhabit their city continually. you haven't witnessed a hapless tourist until you have witnessed one in new york city. fortunately, i have come to the city often enough over the years to be now be a visitor as opposed to a tourist. it's a badge of honor to have made the transition. i am looking forward to being a visitor again as soon as possible.

my friend, david, has created a very whimsical and unique cairn. (the photo is presented as he posted it on facebook).
for those who do not know what a cairn is.....
a cairn is a stack of rocks that are supported only by the balance created in the stacking. a cairn is a tribute (honor) to someone. therefore, each cairn is unique in size, shape, material.

as life progresses there are many places in which we find oursevles. some want to return to some or all of what has been left behind, others only go forward and never return. for all the persons there are, there are that many reasons for taking either course of action. typically, i fall into the second category. however, yesterday, i was somewhere i thought i would never return to. it felt strange and good at the same time. as i left it behind once again, i was very grad that i had ventured into the land of the past. no doubt, doing such will yield equally unpleasant feelings at some returned to locations, however, it seems that perhaps going back it worth that risk more often than not. to where do you wish to return?

whimsical wednesday
my daughters had a classmate who could instantly read a word backwards! she spoke sentences, indeed paragraphs, backwards fluently and it sounded like a foreign language. while it was very funny, it was also amazing. never before or since have i known anyone with this skill. the rest of us would have to write words backwards and read them in order to than speak them.
it's backwards day for whimsical wednesday. i have begun the day writing then speaking my name and the names of several of my furry friends' names backwards. oh, what a hoot! my own first. i am revoltgkt!
a selection of the dogs and cats are newly named (in no particular order or distinction):
stacnrab
palrub
ydneb
orez
nottum
romur
fiaw
hetocsrettub
ailongam
of these, i especially enjoyed saying palrub and nottum!

i have just arrived at my destination post air flight!
seeing the clouds up close and personal brought to mind our whimsical wednesday activity of cloud watching and what could be found in what we observed. there were whispy clouds that reminded me of gentle waves lapping the shoreline. the thick, puffy clouds always look like one should be able to perch upon them. that would certainly be something if it were possible.
what was really thrilling for me, as the plane approached the city and airport, was being familiar enough with the geography and landmarks that i could name all that passed under me! although this isn't home i don't feel like a stranger.
because i'm in a completely different part of the country, it occurred to me that i should be able to spy license plates to add to the list we began in december. i shall feel accomplished if i see even one new plate!

thoughtful thursday
this has been a week of the ever expanding, never ending to-do list (don't most weeks feel that way?). it occurred to me sometime in the middle of it all today that, in addition to all the urgent tasks at hand, it's very important to include a few "tasks" that are not taxing. and these should actually be written on the list or they will be overlooked. take time for that cup of tea or sending an email or watching the birds or taking a short walk or whatever it is that is relaxing. at the end of a day filled with the chores of the to-do list, the goal is to feel productive and accomplished, not harried and frazzled!

whimsical wednesday!
we are celebrating national GRILLED CHEESE SANDWICH month at the whimsey project this whimsical wednesday! so many options for that seemingly humble delight, yes? there is something very humble about a grilled cheese sandwich but it is richly satisfying. grilled cheese sandwiches are great to eat when one doesn't feel well, needs to be cheered with a simple comfort food or wants to be reminded of how simple delightful can be. it also conjures some of the best memories of childhood if your mom (or dad) served grilled cheese sandwiches for lunch or supper. it was a staple on our meatless catholic fridays when we were growing up; grilled cheese and tomato soup. it never seemed much of a sacrifice to me!
so many options indeed! some like pickles on their grilled cheese sandwich, others a slice of tomato. some put butter on the bread before grilling. mom always used crisco (shortening). she was convinced that it made the difference (and she was correct!). some are "healthy" and coat the pan with vegetable spray before grilling. some grill in a pan, others on a griddle. no doubt some bake their "grilled" cheese sandwiches. some like american cheese, others cheddar. however it is prepared it's a grilled cheese sandwich!
my whimsical wednesday began with a new take on the grilled cheese sandwich. because i cannot have gluten anymore, bread was out of the question. it's difficult to eat a blob of melted cheese without a base so i had to come up with something else. an apple slice was a great substitute for the bread. a pan, skillet actually, was given a coat of vegetable spray and allowed to heat on medium briefly. then thick apple slices were added. these were allowed to cook for a few minutes then were topped with sharp cheddar cheese. the "sandwich" was finished when the cheese began to melt. tasty! tasty! tasty fine! my grilled cheese sandwich made an excellent breakfast.
did you have your grilled cheese sandwich this whimsical wednesday?

last tuesday there was no blog post because there was nothing to share. that's something i am pleased about. no need to yak without there being something to yak about. oh wow! that word, yak? it just gave me an idea for a whimsical wednesday activity. i love thinking up activities for whimsical wednesday. and should no one play but me, i still enjoy the anticipation as well as the doing and sharing about the doing.
thank you, twitter followers, for sharing the whimsey project with me. the number of followers continues to increase and there are more tweets about the project all the time. thank you! thank you!
come friday i'll be traveling for a few weeks. it'll be interesting to take the whimsey project on the road for that length of time as well in more than one location. next month the whimsey project will be participating in the performance of the chicago based LUNA TROOP dance company.

days often pass without event and they are thought of as ordinary. ask someone what happened today and the response is typically NOTHING. but did nothing really occur? there is something quite pleasant in the passage of an "ordinary" day. first and foremost, it is lived! being alive is never ordinary however mundane it may seem. so much of ordinary is really routine and sameness; the routine and sameness that provides the stability that life requires. were everyday "eventful" we just might not be able to cope! think about an ordinary day. consider all the moments that are so very special: watching a bird through the window, lighting a candle at dusk and savoring the scent and light filling the room, making the house tidy then feeling good about how nice it looks, exchanging conversation with those closest or even strangers, the sunrise and sunset, folding clean laundry, preparing a meal to share, interacting with children or animal friends, getting the mail from the box or reading the newspaper. all of this and more comprise the magic (and whimsey) of ordinary days. are there really any ordinary days after all?

whimsical wednesday!
this early morning several "tag! you're it....!" email messages were sent and now i am receiving many in return. oh such fun. i have been spending this whimsical wednesday giggling; enjoying email tag with people everywhere! i can "hear" them giggling as well! tell us about your whimsical wednesday email tag!
Monday, March 28, 2011
get ready......
let's play email tag this whimsical wednesday.
send someone an email that reads, "you're it!".
ask them to send to someone else and copy you as well.
the person who receives should send to another person and copy you.
you should end up with all the tags! and so should they as their tags ripple over the net!
(don't be concerned about friends/family tagging each other....that's what would happen if everyone was at the same place playing tag together!)
may you enjoy playing tag all day long!

it's spring. the last few days have seemed so with warm temperatures and sunny skies. today it is dreary, cold and it snowed this morning. how quickly weather conditions change. the weather provides the perfect example for life. just like the weather, there's an absolute certainty regarding life: change! it's always a second away from being something other than what it was a moment ago. we are lulled by routine and sameness as the days pass, however, routine and sameness do not guarantee permanence. routine and sameness makes change more startling, especially abrupt and "unexpected" change. to live as fully as possible, be flexible, calm, tolerant, understanding, caring and, of course, find the whimsey along the way.

whimsical wednesday!
many stops on the errand list today provided many opportunities to talk to others and have them "tell me about....."
in the garden center section of the home improvement store a lady told me about her ants. just so happens i have ants too and was looking for the right traps (the right traps being those that contain one of two chemicals; as suggested by the bug specialist at the county extension office). information i shared with the lady! we selected the appropriate traps, said good luck with our respective ants and goodbye!
the clerk at the checkout counter outside in the garden center area of the home improvement store told me about what a beautiful day it was (and it definitely was a beautiful day). then she told me about how hot it was last summer and how she was outside at the counter in the heat all day, all the time; she wasn't looking forward to that this year! i wished her mild weather like today all the way until august. transaction complete i was on my way.
next was the clerk at the checkout counter at the dollar store. i was purchasing a hard cover book (great price for a dollar!) for my upcoming travel. she related how great it was to buy a book for a dollar when the man waiting in line behind me wanted to know if i purchased books at garage sales. sadly, no since i don't go to garage sales. both the shopper and the clerk told me all about both shopping at and having garage sales. there was a very detailed account of both. had there not been more shoppers behind me and the man, we might still be there talking about garage sales!
then there was the teenage girl i talked to in the restaurant. it was spring break and she told me she wasn't doing anything this week but was glad she didn't have to be in school. i pointed out that she was at a restaurant in the middle of the day in the middle of the week. oh yeah, she realized, she was doing something during spring break.
and the server in the restaurant with the name FON on the nametag! she told me about her name and how fon is short for a name too long to fit on the tag! she got a giggle when i admitted that when i first glanced at her tag i thought it read FUN and how cool it would be to be named fun!
while dining, my friend told me about, as a child, going to her grandmother's farm in the country during the summer and how excellent that was for a little girl growing up in the city. she liked everything about her grandmother's farm; the country, the garden, cooking in the kitchen, picking fruit and making jam, the animals and watching the very tiny black and white television! she said her grandmother made everything wonderful for them and she loved being there.
my "tell me about......" encounters were mini-stories, which is what i expected. what i didn't expect was how all of these strangers (save my friend at lunch) just talked to me. i didn't have to ask anyone to "tell me about....." anything. a smile, a question, a comment, a purchase. all of these sparked the opportunity to share the little stories that creates what we think of as a life. it was a very enjoyable, whimsical day. i was so glad to have been "told about it....." with everyone i encountered throughout the day.

whimsical wednesday is all about stepping out of daily routine with activity we wouldn't otherwise engage in. we might wish to engage but let the pressures of daily have-to and must get in the way. it's as much a pleasure to think of activities as it is to enjoy them. it occurred to me that others might wish to have this pleasure as well! here's your invitation to offer whimsical wednesday activity suggestions! looking forward to your ideas......

this whimsical wednesday we will engage with others. our interactions will begin with "tell me about......." in which we ask anyone else (friend, family member, stranger!) to tell us anything they'd like about whatever they'd like. we will find great surprise in the responses; awesomely whimsical! can't wait for the results! enjoy.......

it's been a very busy day but there was time to partake of a st patrick's day celebration at the club i belong to. the time was shared with two others. we passed out crocheted shamrocks made by my mother and everyone was thrilled to receive these; the shamrocks were pinned on right away. it was a festive occasion with chatter, laughter, a tasty corned beef and cabbage dinner. with everyone wearing green, it seemed to be greener inside than outside!
festive translates into joy. joy is something that is needed to be experienced everyday if possible. whether the joy results from a special occasion like today's st patrick's celebration or a simple, quiet joy like smiling at the birds feeding outside the window, life is so much more pleasant, calmer and resilient when joy is found and experienced. joy is needed. be open to the joy in your life. joy is whimsey.

whimsical wednesday!
at the time of day when darkness had previously come on whimsical wednesday there is daylight! our "celebration" of said change was highlighted in this whimsical wednesday's activity....a late afternoon/early evening walk.
after several days of rain and gloom today dawned sunny and warmed throughout the day; making the walk a lovely time outside. the walk's mission was to seek out evidence of emerging spring bulbs. this is a special spring treat for me as each thanksgiving weekend the family plants all varieties of bulbs, concentrating on a different area about the farm each year. as the only one to be able to enjoy the emergence and blooming of the bulbs, it is my joy to see the gentle reminders of family time together. today's walk was not disappointing. in many planted areas there are much vegetation, other areas have just a hint of plants poking out of the earth, a few have signs of the flowers closed on the central stem.
there's much to report to the family about our spring bulbs after today's whimsical wednesday daylight savings time walk. they were here with me in spirit as well as in the bulbs. happy daylight savings time!

in the book/movie "the remains of the day" there is a moment that captures the day becoming night. one of the main characters wonders why this moment seems to be noticed with special significance to people. that is often a very busy time for people and there is no opportunity for noticing the passing of the day. for me, especially during the time of year before daylight savings time, this is a time savored. as the sun sets, the house feels calm and quiet. a candle burns, the kitties are snoozing, any activity i undertake is also calm and quiet; sometimes i read or listen to classical music or do handicrafts. and sometimes it's when doing absolutely nothing is what is most enjoyed. once daylight savings time has arrived, the remains of the day is enjoyed outside on the porch watching the sunset, the ducks laze on the lake, active deer and birds scurrying about having their last meal of the day. make it your part of your routine to enjoy the remains of the day, at least once a week, alone or with others. perhaps you will also come to savor the moment when day becomes night.

whimsical wednesday!
the kitties and i had a fine morning dancing in the kitchen this whimsical wednesday. the kitties took turns waltzing with me to something classical while water boiled for tea. by the time the music ended the water was boiling. now the tea had to steep so we danced another waltz to more classical music. after all this waltzing, in which the kitties were sure their mommy had gone completely around the bend, it was time for tea. dancing in the kitchen plus tea equals such fun on whimsical wednesday. hopefully you'll dance in the kitchen today and your step, like mine, will be lighter throughout the day.

there hasn't been much time or energy for whimsey today. today was tax day in this household. since that is a slow process for me it took most of the day to complete. however, that task is finished for another year so tonight before bedtime a bit of miscellaneous can be offered.
yesterday, when driving into the grocery store parking lot, i spied a vehicle with a license plate from west virginia. another new state. i'll play this game until all are found. wonder if i'll get alaska or hawaii and if i do how long it will take. we'll find out.
and that's about all my brain can manage for today. tomorrow is whimsical wednesday and we'll dance in the kitchen. i'm looking forward to that.

my daughter described the most fun ever she had with my grandchildren last week while doing household chores, she got a song ready to play, called the little ones into the kitchen and said, "we are going to have a kitchen dance party!" to which the music was started and everyone danced, danced, danced! then chores resumed. what a moment of whimsey. we shall all have a kitchen dance party this wednesday. whether alone or with others, enjoy! i'm looking forward to it.

offered below is the ten commandments of breakfast tea written by a dedicated tea drinker. much of it made me smile and nod in knowing agreement. tea is definitely a vehicle for ritual and this article is a perfect example of ritual. ritual is important in the rhythm of daily life. ritual offers stability, continuity, acts that cross generations and cultures. ritual is personal or shared. there are huge rituals, of course; holidays, weddings, birthdays. these are benchmarks and anchors as life progresses. but the small, daily rituals, like the ritual of breakfast tea, is the substance of life. all of us, at every age, needs a modicum of routine. children are structured by adults. ritual helps adults structure themselves and each other. the ritual of tea is certainly one that occupies my daily routine. another is bird watching. and tracking the visits of wild animals, watching sunrises, sunsets and sightings of the moon. as i consider ritual in my daily routine, i find that i consider much as ritual. ritual offers an openness to whimsey even when those acts don't seem whimsical at all. but they are. think about the rhythm of your daily life. what are you rituals? is the whimsey revealed?
The 10 Commandments of Breakfast Tea
by Marcus Stout

No, these have nothing to do with Holy Commandments from atop a mountain, but everything to do with my morning ritual. Much like a warm beer on a hot Summer afternoon, unless I make my tea using all 10 of these commandments, I am left unsatisfied.
Commandment 1: Thou Shall use Loose Tea – Teabags just don’t cut it. It leaves my tea tasting thin and unflavorful.
Commandment 2: Thou Shall Warm your Teapot – A cold teapot will suck the heat out of the water leaving a tepid brew.
Commandment 3: Thou Shall Steep your Tea for the Recommended Time – Too little time and the tea will turn out weak. Too much and it will be too astringent.
Commandment 4: Thou Shall use Boiling Water – If the water is less than boiling, the tea will taste watery.
Commandment 5: Thou Shall rinse your Tea Leaves – Rinsing the tea leaves helps to “awaken” the leaves, therefore ensuring a great cup of tea.
Commandment 6: Thou Shall use 2% Milk – Tea purists will scoff at this one, but I cannot be without milk in my morning tea...only my morning tea. Skim milk is too thin, while whole milk overpowers the flavor. 2% is perfect.
Commandment 7: Thou Shall use Honey – Once again, purists will disagree. This is purely a matter of taste. Honey provides a richness that sugar cannot replicate
Commandment 8: Thou Shall pour the Milk in the Teacup First – This has been highly debated amongst tea enthusiasts for years. I like to pour the milk in first because I use the same cup every day and know exactly how much to pour. It also gives me something to do while the tea is steeping.
Commandment 9: Thou Shall drink out of a Porcelain Cup – Porcelain provides a smooth surface that gives tea a pure flavor. My tea cup may be my most cherished possession.
Commandment 10: Thou Shall drink your Tea Before Brushing your Teeth – Even if I wait 30 minutes before having my tea (which is almost impossible within itself) I can still taste the minty-ness of the toothpaste. An important tip to remember is to make sure you brush your teeth after drinking your tea or your coworkers may hate you all day!

couldn't wait to paint my toenails* pink today. however, there was no nail polish in the house and none was secured in the last few days. therefore, it was time to get creative. i've got amazing copic markers. RV11, pink, now graces my toenails. i admired them for a bit before putting on my socks. i can feel how colorful they are even covered! happy feet, happy me, happy whimsical wednesday! what color are your toenails?

miscellaneous. i like the word. i have always liked the word. when i was in elementary school, i remember learning to spell miscellaneous. i was so proud to know how to spell all of misc! misc never seemed to adequately and fully capture the essence of miscellaneous. miscellaneous encompasses so much that misc just didn't do it justice. miscellaneous, miscellaneous, miscellaneous! here at the whimsey project, tuesday will be devoted to miscellaneous.
i was on the road today for five hours. it was exciting to have license plate sightings from states that adds to our total begun in late december. iowa and idaho. wheeeee.......
when not looking for new license plates i daydreamed about future doings for the whimsey project. lots to look forward to!
sadly, the wee evergreen seed that was planted for whimsical wednesday didn't germinate. that provides the opportunity to plant more seeds.

there's something special, quietly so, about sitting around the kitchen table other than mealtime. each night my parents somehow gravitate to the table. they work their shared, daily crossword puzzle, browse the newspaper or a similar activity. sometimes there's a snack or something to drink. sometimes there's conversation. often there is just quiet.
when i visit i share this ritual with them. and i am pleased that they welcome me to the table. tonight, as we sat over a dish of ice cream and the crossword puzzle, i thought of how pleasant this shared time is. it may seem routine but it is so very special. there's a closeness felt that isn't quite the same anywhere else in the house during the rest of the day. we are together; not just individuals occupying the same habitat pursuing our own endeavors.
not only am i pleased to share "around the table" with them but grateful for these opportunities. the family bond is strengthened and memories are created. for me, this is just another aspect of whimsey.

when arriving at my destination yesterday i found i would be seeing a friend not seen in several months. i knew then that my something surprising activity would involve her. although the surprise for her was not lighthearted it was heartfelt. her husband died last fall. while at the cemetery i gathered some of the most special flowers at graveside with the intention of drying them and making an arrangement for her to keep. these flowers were the most special because they were a gift from her to her husband. the flowers were prepared for the drying process. while i have been with them several times since the funeral, it was not possible to see our friend as she wasn't yet ready for visiting. so the flowers were left, secure, until i knew we would be able to see her. and that day was today. before she was due to ring the doorbell this afternoon, the dried flowers were created into a lovely arrangement complete with a bow also taken from that special arrangement.
after we visited a bit i informed her that i had a surprise for her. she was presented with the vase of flowers; the vase a gift from my parents. i explained having taken them from the cemetery and that, today, i was able to give her something of that day that she could keep for as long as she wished. she couldn't have been expected to focus on flowers during that day even if they were chosen by her to be given to her husband as a final gift. seeing them today was like seeming them for the first time.
she was so very pleased by our gift to her. i do believe that this has been one the most wonderful whimsical wednesdays i have yet to experience. certainly not as whimsical as one might imagine but, somehow, there was a magic to this interaction we shared.

thoughtful thursday
"thanks for contributing to my happiness. can you carry me to bed and tuck me in? i'm not too big for that, am i?"
so said my granddaughter to her mother at the end of her tenth birthday yesterday (2.16.11). of which, when i was privy to this sentiment, melted me instantly and completely. oh, sweet mefi! so innocently offered from the heart. my darling granddaughter's words embody everything the whimsey project aims for: no matter our age, always be open to the joyful whimsey that makes life grand (and often bearable); even when we don't realize whimsey has touched us.
happy birthday, megan! i love you dearly.

whimsical wednesday!
it was already 40 degrees at eight this morning when the snow search was undertaken. home again and writing about my whimsical wednesday experience almost an hour later and it's already 50 degrees! it was good timing to search for hidden snow patches because, if the temperature continues to be this high, there won't be anymore hidden snow patches of snow.
my search began in the meadow. looking about me as i walked along the trail, there was no sign of snow or ice or anything resembling the results of a winter storm. from the meadow i trekked into the woods. along the beginning of the trails not a snow patch in sight! it wasn't until i was in the lowest areas of the woods, by the creek, that any snow patches were evident. still in the woods, but closer to the western border along the road, there were a few snow patches peeking out from behind trees. the creek is still frozen so there were several snow patches tucked into the curves and bends of the creek bed.
monday i was being slightly poetic when stating that we should search for snow patches amid the emerging green of the coming spring. after posting that i was a bit sheepish, thinking that might have been something of an overstatement. however, to my happy surprise, there was much evidence of emerging green on today's snow search! tiny tufts of green grass were spied all along the walk. warmer temperatures, tiny tufts of green grass and fewer than expected snow (or ice) patches are sure signs that spring will soon be here.

flowers at the herb and garden show
the annual herb and garden show was at the times square mall february 11th through 13th. the whimsey project was there. a free craft, the five minute flower, was offered to attendees. materials for the craft were recycled magazines and household items like glue sticks and tape. it was lots of fun to be at the herb and garden show. after making a flower one crafter exclaimed, "how lovely; very whimsical!". we thought so as well. here are photographs of the event:

get ready.....
temperatures have been in the 40s through 60s the last few days, melting the ice and snow; most of the earth once again revealed. at first glance, it seems to be completely gone. my favorite part of the signs of winter disappearing is the unexpected patches of ice or snow still hiding! this whimsical wednesday, take a walk and note all the ice or snow that continues to linger amid the emerging green of the coming spring. enjoy!

today will begin a new weekly feature here at the whimsey project. one (or more) photographs encountered along the way will be highlighted as excellent examples of whimsey that just have to be shared.
in this seemingly unrelenting winter it seems appropriate to begin with photographs that depict how a sense of humor flourishes amid the cold, ice and snow! these had me chortling and guffawing as awesomely funny and, of course, whimsical! enjoy!

whimsical wednesday!
an open mind regarding what to create helped guide me while shopping for whimsical wednesday on monday. when i spied red, heart-shaped doilies i knew just what the valentines would look like!. a package of doilies and a bag of traditional candy hearts were purchased. i was ready. i almost couldn't wait until today to make valentines.
the valentines? red, heart shaped cones filled with candy hearts. the doilies were shaped into cones. tucked into each cone went a small baggie of candy hearts. the collection of valentines were put in a basket; ready to share on valentine's day.

it's very cold today and now, mid afternoon, it's snowing! the activity for whimsical wednesday helped warm me, however. making valentines to give to others next monday was a very pleasant way to spend part of the day. i smiled while creating and find that i am smiling still. make a few valentines and smile yourself!

get ready.....
next monday is valentine's day. that was quite a big day in elementary school. the anticipation was palpable! this whimsical wednesday, let's make valentines. or, if you wish, pick up a box of the old fashioned school style valentines at the dollar store. most of these packages contain at least 25 valentines. prepare them all. there will be enough to pass out to family, friends and a few strangers as well.

let it snow! let it snow! let it snow!
it's snowing. really snowing! while weary of winter, it's too beautiful not to enjoy it. the world seems so "other-worldly" when it snows. a hush like no other settles over the earth. living here in the country makes it seem even more so as, all around me, there is nothing but the earth and its wonders covered in a blanket of snow. because i feed the birds so many come to have a meal. i welcome them all, even the ones others call a nuisance. the multitude of birds are incredibly vivid in the snow. the red of the cardinals is redder, the blue of the blue jays is bluer. the largest birds that come are the wild turkeys. oh, those are impressive creatures. and i feel so incredibly fortunate to glance out the window at just the right moment to watch them. they scratch the snow to find the corn. they saunter across the frozen lake. they disappear into the woods. the deer come to feed on the corn that is supposed to be for the ducks (as do the turkeys). the many stray cats get fed as well. that brings the smaller critters, like raccoons, to dinner as well. some would complain about all those intruders. i love them all; especially in the snow.

whimsical wednesday!
copic markers, paper and a cup of hot tea were gathered for engaging in today's whimsical wednesday activity of doodling. thinking i would have a midday break of about 15 to 20 minutes, i looked up from my doodles to discover that an hour had passed; the cup of hot tea cold! the finished product was held up and admired with giggles. it's just a piece of paper with colored doodles on it but it felt like a masterpiece! to be completely engrossed in selecting colors to use in each step of the doodling and then seamlessly blending the colors to complete the unplanned project was wonderful. to be able to engage in and concentrate on an activity that took me completely "away" from a busy day's chorelist was so relaxing. now i am more than ready to tackle the rest of the day's tasks. did you doodle today?

whimsey continues
the last month or so of whimsical wednesday activities have been on going, it seems. quiet time each day continues and it is so renewing. nurturing that wee evergreen tree seed has been a beacon of spring amid all the ice, cold and snow of winter. watching the birds enjoy their epiphany suet treat and the treats of the pinecone, apple and orange of this week has been a joy. i continue to scan license plates for different states whenever i drive, even if it's just a trip to town. playing that road trip game keeps me close to my grandchildren because when i see a new state to add to our list, that's something i can share with them even at a distance.
having whimsey as a priority; thinking about activities for future wednesdays, then looking forward to participation in these adventures and enjoying the results of that participation has been such a pleasure. some wednesdays have been extremely busy or stressful but i have not failed to complete the offered activity. it's a commitment i keep to the project and myself. in doing so those very busy and stressful days become less so when the time is taken for whimsey. the community wide activities are such fun in the planning and doing and sharing with others. as the whimsey project continues, i look forward to more adventures and more followers to join in the whimsey along with me.

whimsical wednesday!
the birds are happy! my day began with making my whimsical wednesday bird treats. monday three suggestions were offered for making a bird treat. i made all three! a mixture of peanut butter, bird seed, orange and apple bits were blended together to form the treat. some of the treat was spread on the pinecone, some tucked into the polka dots made in a whole apple and the rest filled the two halves of an orange. the pinecone and apple were placed at the bird feeding station in the back yard and the orange halves were placed in the half log feeder on the rail along the porch off the sunroom. all were placed where they were because i can see them readily from the sunroom, where i spend most of my time. as i sipped a cup of hot tea (tea is grand!) i watched for birds to discover their newly offered treats. it wasn't long when one, then two, then several birds began feasting on the apple, pinecone and orange. oh joy. happy birds, happy me!

seeds
this is the week of seeds, it seems. i've been tending the wee evergreen tree seed planted last whimsical wednesday. and this week's whimsical wednesday's activity is to create a treat for the birds using birdseed and other ingredients. the garden catalogues began to arrive in the mail, full of seeds for spring. all seeds of whimsey........

get ready.....
birds occupy much of my attention during the winter so this whimsical wednesday let's make a homemade bird treat. remember when we made them by spreading peanut butter on pinecones then rolling the cones in birdseed? do this. or, if you don't have a pinecone, use fruit. cut an orange in half, loosen the pulp and mix seed into the pulp. the orange itself is the container. an apple can be used as well. create holes in the apple by cutting out small circular sections of apple intermittently around the apple. be sure not to poke all the way through the apple. after making all the holes, fill the holes with peanut butter and birdseed that was premixed.
you'll have fun with this activity and, if you have children, they will enjoy doing this with you.

whimsical wednesday!
it's so very cold and a winter storm warning alerts that ice and snow will cover the area later today. what could be more promising as a sign of the coming spring then to plant seeds, the activity for this whimsical wednesday. thinking there was the odd packet or two of flower seeds laying about somewhere in the house, there was no effort to purchase any while in town on monday. when looking for said packet(s) this morning none but evergreen tree seeds could be found. wow! why not, i thought? i've never attempted to grow a tree of any type from a seed before. out came the throwaway cup, potting soil and a pen. my name was printed on the cup, potting soil then filled the cup, a small depression poked in the center of the soil, the seed (the largest one in the packet) dropped in, the soil smoothed over the seed, a bit of water sprinkled on the soil and the cup placed in the window. there. my participation in whimsical wednesday complete. however, the involvement will continue for each day there will be the need to nurture the wee seed with more water and turning the cup and looking closely for signs of life sprouting from the seed beneath the soil. i am hopeful the wee seed will soon be a wee seedling. should the seed manage to germinate and survive to a viable size, how wonderful it will be to plant my whimsical evergreen tree somewhere on the farm.

whimsical wednesday!
the strategy for getting a bit of downtime for myself each day is to do nothing for 15 minutes. doing nothing means just that. i shall set the timer then sit in the quietest space in the house without tv, music or other distractions and just be. i shall daydream or let my mind rest. i shall be still. whatever unfolds from this quiet time may be quite wonderful.

get ready.....
home from a great weekend with the a fraction of my family. no new license plate sightings. there's always the next road trip! the weekend was great, without a doubt, however, it was also nonstop and extremely hectic. at the end of each day we were all completely done in. thoughts of this experience were with me during much of the drive today. typically resolutions are not a part of my new year's ritual, however, this whimsical wednesday select at least one strategy to get a bit more downtime in daily life; time to allow for whimsey.

additional sightings and epiphany
that whimsical wednesday activity of sighting the license plates of the united states continues. once begun, it is difficult to stop looking in the quest to sight the unsighted. travel yesterday was no exception. on the journey from the farm to the big city of chicago, two more states and another from canada were spotted: quebec, new jersey and new mexico. the family was just as excited to hear about these sightings as they were when we spied plates together during last week's travels.
the additional wee whimsical gifts were placed in the grandchildren's rooms for them to discover upon returning home from school yesterday. they piled in at the end of the day, full of laughter and bursting with news of the day. after entering their rooms, more delight upon sighting the wee halloween bags filled with treats. they loved the treat and thought it very funny that their grandmother would give them a treat in a bag decorated with jack-o-lanterns for epiphany. epiphany lasted a very long time this year. keep giving.

whimsical wednesday!
it's whimsical wednesday and the last day of christmas, epiphany. when my daughters were in college they spent time in spain. they experienced christmas differently and they really enjoyed it. epiphany is the day the wise men arrived at the manger and presented the christ child with gifts. the real christmas celebration in spain is on this gift giving day. we are outside the norm here in america since we celebrate the twelve days of christmas instead of from thanksgiving to christmas day. the spanish experience helped cement our determination to continue to buck the trend and stick with tradition.
to honor tradition this whimsical wednesday, the tiny gift of suet cakes were made for the birds. they really enjoy these homemade treats as the cakes are filled with a great deal of seeds, nuts and dried fruit. and lard! as soon as they set, two were put in the suet baskets hanging at the bird feeding station. they received the physical gift but i am the true recipient because i am enjoying observing all the activity they bring to the bird feeding station.

there are twelve days of christmas, beginning on christmas day. the last day, this wednesday, is epiphany; when the wise men arrived at the manger of the christ child bearing gifts. even if you celebrate the christmas season the way most people do now, from thanksgiving to christmas day, please consider offering someone a small gift this wednesday. make it whimsical. simply whimsical.
whimsical wednesday! postscript....
on the return journey from our new year's visit we decided to continue to play the license plate game. we decided to find some of the other half of the states we did not see on the way. we added one state, louisiana. we also saw plates from three canadian proviences: british columbia, ontario and newfoundland. it was fun and, no doubt, we will continue to look for the remaining states just because.
