whimsical wednesday

we're exploring wabi-sabi for whimsical wednesday.  wabi-sabi is a japanese philosophy that embraces the imperfections in life.  (for more information see links posted on monday; get ready for whimsical wednesday).  many sources i read discussed "practicing" the art of the imperfect. that was confounding to me as we don't need to practice! imperfect is inevitable.  then i realized that the practice was in the acceptance of the imperfect. whimsical wednesday's activity is to apply wabi-sabi to the "imperfect" that is important to you. share your whimsical wednesday wabi-sabi with the whimsey project!

the floor.  in the realm of wabi-sabi the floor in my home is my nemesis! when i sweep and mop the floor, the outcome i expect is clean.  very clean. completely clean as in getting all the debris when sweeping and all the spots when mopping. that never happens. i can never get it all.  it's a major grrrrrr.....   the bane of my housekeeping existence!  i often feel i could live with the debris, dirt and huge dust bunnies with more compatibility then missing some of it when i attempt to clean the floor. thus, the floor was my wabi-sabi activity for whimsical wednesday. armed with my broom, i dug in. with great concentration i endeavored to capture that which did not belong on the floor. the floor got a thorough sweep then a second once over.  whatever was left (hiding from me; laughing, laughing, laughing) just had to be the imperfect. the post-sweeping inspection revealed that the task got more dirt than it left behind. i see what was missed but i'm ok with it. sort of. now the mopping part? that will have to wait for another day of practicing wabi-sabi.  i used up all my patience with the sweeping!

miscellaneous monday

there's only so much time in a day, week, month, year. time is filled with musts and these have to be addressed.  but how many musts are there really?  recently i decided that the limitations of time and body alone influenced how much a person can accomplish.  my solution to these limitations? eat dessert first!  (not literally, although that sounds good too.) instead of giving the best of myself to all the musts, i have been altered my daily routine. the pressing chores like feeding the fur will be occur. thereafter, i sit down to work on art projects. the table is strewn with projects and supplies. i don't put it away. i want to be able to sit down and immediately create. if the table is needed for another purpose like eating a meal, the supplies get moved to the side. after focusing on art projects for awhile, i'm actully more ready (and willing) to attend to some of the chores. allowing myself the freedom to do create on my terms has done wondered for my art and my person.

get ready.....

solitude sunday

solitude sunday at the whimsey project. our day to spend time with a book.  any book will do. just read! maybe read a book that's been on a shelf a long time waiting for you!  share your book too.

having finished the lifetime reading plan last sunday, i picked up another book the same day. it's very absorbing so i am already halfway through it. the devil in the white city by erik larson is an accounting of the 1893 chicago world's fair. it is a parallel story of the main architect of the fair, daniel burnham and dr h.h. holmes, america's jack the ripper who used the fair and chicago at large as his hunting grounds. an amazing true account that reads like the best fiction of crime and mystery.

whimsical wednesday at the whimsey project. today we are preparing for father's day.  create a card, make a simple useful item, make a coupon book of activities or services you'll perform. find out dad's favorite meal and make preparations to prepare that on father's day. collaborate with siblings on a surprise.  if you have no father to honor, find ways to continue to do so. remember those guys who have been like a dad to you.

my father is no longer living so my father's day honor to him will be a donation to the vfw honor guard that he serviced for 50 years.

my young second grader friend was in need of a reading tutor so i volunteered. our first session was this week; at my house. she looks in the candy bowl to see if there was anything tasty in it. she looked at me startled as she found the candy bowl filled with candy canes. "there's christmas candy in the candy bowl! it's not christmas!" i readily admitted she was correct. as we work on her lessons, i cheer every time she was correct. again, i get that look. this time she said, "please hold the cheering until we are finished!" okay then! fellow wim-zees, it took all my strength not to guffaw copiously while enjoying tutoring time.

miscellaneous monday

miscellaneous monday at the whimsey project. our day to share miscellaneous, stuff that comes to mind, bright ideas and so forth.  share some of your miscellaneous here at the whimsey project.

it's memorial day.  typically considered the beginning of summer. people have picnics at memorial day. i attended one. the menu was standard american fare: hot dogs, hamburgers, baked beans and potato salad.  watermelon, cantaloupe and brownies for dessert.  yes, brownies.

brownies seem to be the unofficial official picnic dessert.  my contribution to the meal was the brownies. it got me thinking about brownies; some like the soft inside, some like the balance between the soft and the crust (that touches the sides of the baking pan) and some just like the crust. some like chewy, fudgy brownies and others like them more like cake. there's a preference for icing or no icing. naked brownies or dressed brownies, which would be a dusting of powdered sugar or no powdered sugar. some like them plain, others like them with additional ingredients like nuts. some like milk chocolate and some like dark chocolate brownies. some like them with a scoop of ice cream or just out of the pan.

me? i like fudgy, chewy brownies, the balance between the crust and soft, no icing, naked (but won't quibble about a dusting of powdered sugar), dark chocolate with additional ingredients like nuts, chocolate chips, coconut.  with or without a scoop of vanilla ice cream. how do you like your brownies?

get ready.....

get ready for whimsical wednesday! it's national cellophane tape day so let's play with tape! create something, mend something, do whatever you wish with tape.  we won't limit ourselves to cellophane tape as there's duct tape, decorative tape, washi tape, painters' tape, masking tape, to name a few. just have fun with tape!

a portion of the chapter on narratives in clifton fadiman's, the lifetime reading plan, was today's reading.  i didn't get super far before falling asleep on the couch, however, i read about bunyan, defoe, swift and sterne and fielding. fadiman's take on defoe's robinson crusoe is different than anything i had ever read about sterne's narrative, tristram shandy.  fadiman posits that shandy is written with psychological theory as it's guiding premise.  he calls defoe's crusoe a stick. intriguing.

solitude sunday at the whimsey project. our day to spend time with a book. any book will do, however, consider reading those books that have been waiting on the shelf for a long time.  share your book!

the lifetime reading plan by clifton fadiman.  this book is an introduction to western literature and thought.  called the classics, each author's work is given a summary by mr fadiman; along with his recommendations for further reading. this morning i read the introduction as well as the summaries of the works of homer, herodotus, thucydides, plato and aristotle.

trivia tuesday

trivia tuesday at the whimsey project! our day to share all manner of trivia; factual or experiential. all welcome.  bring it on!

we are at the time of year when america focuses on the end of the civil war.  my trivia is from this event.  the word deadline. andersonville in georgia was a prison for captured union soldiers. within the walls was a perimeter of posts.  these posts, about five feet from the walls, was the line prisoners could not cross or they would be shot.  the line became known as the deadline.

fellow wim-zee, windy and her little family, did a fun for her brother for easter. while he was away from home, they hid plastic eggs all over his house.  in each egg was the part to a lego set. if her brother found all the eggs he would have a complete lego set and the instructions!  you can begin to plan your own such easter whimsey for next year!

whimsical easter surprise!

solitude sunday

solitude sunday at the whimsey project. our day to spend time with a book. any book will do, however, consider those books that have been waiting a long time to be read. share your book with the whimsey project.

this week i have been reading "wildflowers of tennessee (the ohio valley and the southern appalachians) edited by horn, cathcart, hemmerly and duhl.  it is the official field guide of the tennessee native plant society.  while the majority of the book is photographs and descriptions of plants, the introduction was very enlightening.  i especially learned much reading about the geological terrains of the state of tennessee and how the variances influence the growth of the wildflowers.

whimsical wednesday

we're creating trading cards for whimsical wednesday! like baseball cards, a trading card is a mini-bio about a particular aspect of a person.  for whimsey, we'll be creating trading cards about any person, place, thing; real or imagined.  for example, you might create a trading card about your pet, a house, the beach, a character from a favorite book or movie.  use whatever materials you wish and make your trading card large or small.  share your card with the whimsey project!

miscellaneous monday

miscellaneous monday at the whimsey project! our day to share something about everything. your tidbits are welcomed so give us your miscellaneous!

i've read about rosa's fresh pizza in philadelphia in several publications of late. mason wartman opened a pizza shop in 2013, selling pizza for one dollar a slice.  he discovered that even at one dollar a slice there were those in the neighborhood that couldn't afford to buy his pizza.  however, he never turned away a customer for lack of funds. one day a customer asked to pay for a slice for someone else so they could eat.  mason agreed and that's how the shop became filled with colorful sticky notes. one note turned into more than 10,000 since then.  the first one was put on the wall and others followed suit. no one is unable to eat at rosa's fresh pizza. anyone can pull a sticky note off the wall and use it to pay for a dollar slice of pizza. there should be a rosa's fresh pizza shop in every community all over the country!

get ready.....

baseball season just opened!  that means trading cards!  for whimsical wednesday let's create our own trading card. a trading card is a mini bio about an aspect of a person; just like a baseball player. be thinking about what you'll place on your trading card; you, someone else, pets, places, things for whimsical wednesday.

another borrowed book (it's interesting to be away from home and read what others have on their bookshelves).  st louis: then and now by elizabeth mcnulty. lots of photographs and lots of history about the city of my birth. dredd scott, the arch to mark the gateway to the west, scott joplin, the 1904 world's fair that later became forest park filled with amazing treasures (the jewel box being my favorite), fried ravioli, and what high school did you go to? that's the st louis i knew and the st louis i found in st louis: then and now.

whimsical wednesday

whimsical wednesday should be a busy day! we are celebrating the birthday of sliced bread (1954). also, it's also national fun day. fun day can be described by a word i recently learned:  gammock! gammock means a piece of fun, a game, a jest, a frolic, antics or tricks.  perhaps this is from which april fool's day originated. have a fun day with sliced bread and a game or frolic or antics. we'll leave tricks to others.  share your fun with the whimsey project!
