whimsical wednesday

the first cafeteria in america opened in new york city on september 4, 1885!  this was the theme for today's whimsical wednesday activity!  what did you do?  think of your cafeteria experiences?  eat at a cafeteria? cook a favorite cafeteria dish?

for cafeteria day for whimsical wednesday i thought about the silly song my sister and i used to sing when we were little dorks (now we are big dorks).  it was one of many songs on a 45 rpm record we played over and over and over again.  our favorite?  the cafeteria song!  the words:

i've eaten in all of the diners.
in hamburger places as well.
i've eaten in drug stores and restaurants alike,
some were the best in the town.
alas comes our school cafeteria;
so nice, so clean, so neat.
but you'll wonder how we are still living,
when you hear what they gave us to eat!

on monday we had bread and gravy.
on tuesday it's gravy and bread.
on wednesday and thursday it's gravy and toast,
which is nothing but gravy and bread.

on that day we went to the principal;
to ask for something instead.
so on friday for lunch in a way of a change,
we had gravy without any bread!

i'm laughing with happy memories as i type.  i taught this song to my children and then my grandchildren.  if my sister reads this, hopefully she'll correct any errors in the words as it was a very long time ago that we sang this silly song over and over and over again (we drove our brothers crazy)!

  1. LOL LOL can you hear me laughing from Tennessee?
    Made my day to read this Whimsey Post.
    We drove the big bros so crazy that they used the record as bbgun target practice. However, by then we had all the songs deeply rooted into our memories, so we could sing them as a duet and still drive them crazy. I have been on a lifelong search to find a copy of that record!
    We will have to share more songs on Whimsey such as Ladles and Gentlespoons.
