cinco de mayo means the fifth of may and commemorates the victory of the mexican army over french forces at the battle of puebla. while the town of puebla, mexico, observes cinco de mayo, most of the rest of mexico does not. the celebration as we know it actually began in los angeles, california, in the 1060s. now, a celebration of mexican culture, americans consume more than 80 million pounds of avocados on cinco de mayo.
