whimsical wednesday

3. so says mapache kitty.  she wrote that it's national caramel day for whimsical wedneday! we are all things caramel today! enjoy caramels however you wish but, definitely, at the very least, eat some!

it occurred to me that i had never made caramel from a recipe, having always used candy caramels or jarred caramel sauce from the grocery store. this gap in my culinary experience sent me on a quest to find a simple caramel sauce recipe and cook away.  the following is the recipe i found and used:

very simple to do with items a kitchen typically has in stock. and quick.  it didn't take long at all. after making the sauce and letting it cool for five minutes, i poured it over a layer of cinnamon toast crunch cereal (spread on parchment paper on a cookie sheet). it is cooling and hardening now as i post. i might be pouring a thin layer of melted chocolate over the caramel covered cereal as well! so far the tiny sample of caramel and cereal was yum!

    1. i do too. i will be making it myself from now on. i also found a recipe for making caramel with sweetened condensed milk. open the can, place it in water, cook for several hours and the milk becomes caramel! i will try that recipe too!

  2. The sweetened condensed milk experiment was something that one of the "kitchen groups" did in one of my foods classes. I'm not sure what the unit was about but remember one group got to do that.
