whimsical wednesday

it's national corn chip day!  for whimsical wedneday munch some of the crunchy treat; alone or with your favorite dip or salsa.  sprinkle them on a salad or chili. crush them and mix them into meatloaf or burgers or meatballs.  have fun with corn chips!

my corn chip experience had me making my own corn chips.  a packet of six inch white corn tortillas was cut into small strips, placed on a lightly greased baking sheet then lightly sprayed with vegetable spray. the strips were baked in a 350 degree oven for approximately four minutes until golden brown (watch closely so the chips don't burn).  salt or not, according to taste.  cool on baking sheet.  enjoy!

as soon as the chips were removed from the oven i taste tested one.  they were tasty fine!  much fresher and lighter tasting than purchased corn chips.  my corn chips are going to be enjoyed with chili for lunch on this super cold whimsical wednesday.

tell us about your corn chip day this whimsical wednesday!

moments monday

moments monday.  our day to reflect and/or connect.  we reflect by writing in our memory books.  what is a memory book?  any notebook in which we write random memories.  how do we connect?  we connect with others by calling, visiting, writing a letter or sending a card.  do you have any ideas for reflecting or connecting?  if so share those ideas with the whimsey project.

for moments monday i wrote in my memory book.  the focus was the pet turtles we had when we were little kids living in st louis.  churchie.  that was the name of all our turtles.  churchie was the name of the turtle in the comic strip pogo.  we only had one churchie at a time and they all lived in the basement.

solitude sunday

solitude sunday.  the day we have set aside to spend time with a book for whatever time you have to devote to the weekly endeavor.

the book i am reading about abraham lincoln is divided by the years of his presidency instead of chapters. month by month, the book explores lincoln and the prominence that the civil war occupied his time and attention.  i have read to the end of 1863. what confounds is how poorly war is executed, how vain, self-interested and stubborn military leaders are.  and the soldiers who blindly, for all the right reasons, fight. the saving grace of managing to read this book is how many interesting facts and photographs there are about president lincoln. the family that wrote the book, holds the largest collection of photographs of abraham lincoln, from the first known photographs of him to the very last just prior to his death. what a remarkable goal to aspire to; collecting the images of the sixteenth president.

what are you reading?

it's a blustery day!  everything not heavy enough or tied down is blowing away. reminds me of the pooh story about the blustery day.  there is only wisps of snow on the ground here and there.  the lake is still frozen and snow covered.

last year, my sister organized a gal-pal retreat at a tennessee state park for a few friends and me.  we had such a wonderful time; the cabin large and well equipped.  a fireplace that we had aflame the entire stay.  our view was overlooking the lake. we had yummy food, lots of conversation and laughter, and crafts.  each of us had our own projects as well as a project or two to share with the others to create (in the trade called a make and take!).  to prevent finding myself up against the date to leave, i have one of my make and take projects ready!  what an accomplishment! and i've been looking at recipes for what i might cook for the meals i am responsible for.

my art journal and i have gotten re-acquainted.  yay!

i have been enjoying the whimsey project's new features.  hopefully you are too.

solitude sunday

it's solitude sunday; an opportunity to spend time, whatever time you wish or have, with a book!  this morning, i got more acquainted with abraham lincoln over tea. the book i am reading is filled with photographs.  it's neat to actually see the people, places and events of lincoln's presidency as well as read about it all.  what are you reading?

more snow, snow, snow!  is that even news this winter? people are already talking longingly of spring.

did you have a look at yesterday's photo friday?  it's a photo of our leftover almond pie from thanksgiving. we ate all we wanted but i didn't want to throw it away.  it occurred to me that the birds might enjoy it. it was nuts and gooey filling and pie crust. foodstuff that would be found in a suet cake. and it was super cold so it wouldn't spoil.  thinking why not? the pie was placed on a tray at the bird feeding station. i watched daily to see if the birds had taken to it.  it took awhile but the birds found it and they have munched it to crumbs. thanksgiving pie becomes fancy bird suet!

the first week of the new whimsey project daily doings is complete.  solitude sunday, moments monday and trivia tuesday are grand additions to the whimsey project. please share any activities you'd enjoy.

whimsical wednesday

it's wikipedia day for whimsical wednesday! we're having an adventure exploring the on-line encyclopedia. learn something new about a subject you are interested in or just enjoy browsing.  here's the link:
  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page

yesterday i was catching the weather on the weather channel.  to highlight santa ana winds, the scene aired was a lone shopping cart being rolled by the wind across the parking lot.  that prompted my wikipedia quest for whimsical wednesday.  the shopping cart!

according to wikipedia, the shopping cart that evolved into the shopping cart of today was the owner of the piggly wiggly grocery store in oklahoma city, sylvan goldman.  the first cart was in the store on june 4, 1937. shoppers were not impressed.  women felt shopping carts were like baby carriages and men thought pushing the cart was too girly.  not to be deterred, goldman waged a marketing campaign to make the shopping carts acceptable.  he hired male and female models to push carts around the store as well as have greeters at the store's entrance to explain the use of the cart.  carts became accepted and sales rose. other stores, grocery and department, introduced carts and sales rose in those stores as well. once introduced the major problems with carts became injured children, wonky wheels and cart theft.  which, of course, demonstrates that everything has drawbacks!

carts by other names are still carts!  around the world the shopping cart is referred to as:  buggy, trolley, barrae, bascart, basket, carriage, wagon.

thoughtful thursday

be resourceful.  there's more right in front of us than we realize.  this reminder came to me watching the birds during the polar vortex we have experienced during the past week.  last summer i hung a thistle seed feeder on the bird feeding station. that particular treat went untouched until the earth was covered with ice and snow. now the thistle seeds were much sought after by all manner of birds; not just the small ones that a mesh feeder is designed for.  the small birds pecked at the feeder and, in the process of getting seed, seed fell to the ground.  here larger birds and other small birds could also eat.  it wasn't long before the larger birds tried to get seed from the mesh feeder directly.  soon after the large birds tried to feed directly from the food source, a large hole appeared in the mesh feeder.  the large birds had access to the seed as well as scattering much of the seed on the ground.  now all of the birds congregate at the bird feeding station to munch thistle seed from an altered mesh feeder!  resourceful.  and not just for the birds!
