In reading the book, "Elizabeth The Queen", I recently finished the description of her coronation. The Queen is a small lady and wore a heavy white satin gown. The Robe of State had an eighteen-foot train. That robe along with her diadem and jewelry was removed to be replaced by: a simple white linen dress over her gown, Coronation robes weighing thirty-six pounds, her regalia: two armills (thick 22 K gold bracelets) and the Jeweled Sword of Offering, ruby and sapphire coronation ring, jeweled scepters and an orb. Then St. Edward's Crown of solid gold set with 444 semiprecious stones was set on her head. All together more than 45 pounds of weight! Lots of weight, physically and symbolically!
ReplyDeletei wonder, if she had to hold up all that stuff, what held her up?
DeleteShe rehearsed for weeks, sitting at her desk wearing the crown and walking with a sheet pinned to her shoulders with weights on it to replicate the robe. At point in the book, in the chapter about the coronation, it mentioned her wearing the crown again and she stated several hours later that she felt she still had it on and muscles in neck and shoulders ached. I would imagine they would!!!
Deletewhoa! no doubt her neck isn't all that ached! is this a book about the current elizabeth or elizabeth one?
DeleteFrom All YOU magazine: "Did you know there's such a thing as fear of snow? It's called CHIONOPHOBIA. (Chion is snow in Greek.)"
