today i began to read, second suns, by david oliver relin. this book chronicles the story of an american doctor and a doctor from nepal. their mission is to rid the world of preventable blindness.

we are santa for whimsical wednesday! our activity for today is to think of people you know or know of who you would like to bring cheer and a huge smile.
*make a list of your giftees. make it a list of someone you are not already giving gifts to. maybe the local police or fire departments or other public service people. also, the mail carrier, trash collector, paper delivery person.  maybe someone at a store that has provided you with great service. or the doctor's or dentist's office staff. or people you know from somewhere who will be alone during the holidays. you get the idea.....
*determine what you will gift. make a batch of cookies or candy, homemade jelly or jam, drink mix like hot chocolate, hand stamped postcards or a happy saying stamped on a card for posting on the refridgerator. if you aren't a maker, consider items from the dollar store. a large candy bar, a small box of cookies, scented soap or candles. pencils, notepads. there are lots of options. always look around the house first. you might have the perfect gifts right at home.
*you can shop if that's your plan.
*you can wrap as well.
*you do not have to deliver on this day unless it's convenient.

i've been thinking about the holiday season and all the time we spend planning, decorating, preparing, getting gifts for those we love. what if we took some of that time and gave it directly to those who benefit from all the holiday hoopla? more time for people and less time for activities for people. or involve more people in the doing of the activities of the season. more togetherness!

mara wilson, the child actor of matilda, is all grown up as indicated in her book, where am i now? it's an easy read so i am well into after just beginning the volume. she's a very thoughtful writer and i am enjoying her stories.

get out all the holiday catalogues for whimsical wednesday! gather them in a pile. go through them. cut out items you wish you could give to others and a few for yourself! create a collage or cards or art journal page. get a picture or draw a christmas tree and hang the items on the tree. play, have pretend shopping fun and be whimsical!

my masterpiece is a collage from two catalogues. i had four to look through but only really liked items in two. rather than cut out flowers/plants from the jackson and perkins catalogue, i used the cover as the base for the rest of the items selected. this page will go into my art journal that has lots of miscellaneous work.
