we are celebrating uncommon musical instruments day for whimsical wednesday! here's a link to learn more about this day:
https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/uncommon-instrument-awareness-day/
let's get creative! look in the kitchen or toolbox or closets. select items you think might make music! (we define music as any sound that comes from the "uncommon" instrument in any pattern or rhythm.) bang, shake, strum, pick at the items you have selected. play them solo or play them with a song or instrumental accompaniment. like what you hear? share your uncommon musical instruments adventure with the whimsey project!
a grand time was had this whimsical wednesday making music on unconventional instruments!
*from the bathroom, two hairbrushes were rubbed together, then separately with my fingers. a strumming sound was the result.
*in the kitchen, there were several "instruments" to employ for music making:
#lots of shaking with food containers: box of macaroni, jar of pop corn, canister of oatmeal, cans of salsa, black beans, sweetened condensed milk, a bottle of vegetable oil and a box of stevia sweetener packets.
#from the refrigerator a bag of fresh cherries was shaken as was a bottle of milk, a container of bread crumbs and a bag of whole shelled walnuts.
*the craft supply shelves had me shaking containers of findings, tacks and miscellaneous supplies.
*the knife drawer offered music with the knife sharpener and a few knives.
*the kitchen utensil drawers offered measuring spoons, whisks, tongs and scissors.
*the miscellaneous item drawer in the kitchen brought a wonderful sound from all the various keys gathered together and shaking them all at the same time.
*a homemade instrument was created by putting bottle caps and corks in an empty cocoa baking powder, replacing the lid and shaking away.
the whimsey project is an on-going opportunity for others to join the artist in happenings as well as blog about life's whimsical experiences. if you have a sense of humor and enjoy the absurd, join us at the whimsey project.

solitude sunday
solitude sunday at the whimsey project. our day to spend time with a book. i am reading konrad z. lorenz's king solomon's ring. mr lorenz was one of the most influential naturalists of the 20th century. a whimsical feature of his writing is there are wee drawings of animals in the margin of the book pages; depictions of the animals currently being discussed in the chapters. what are you reading? share your book with the whimsey project!

whimsical wednesday
it's july! a month with five wednesdays. a month of five wednesdays includes a whimsical wednesday devoted to journal writing. if you do not currently keep a journal, today is a grand day to begin. what journals should you keep? whatever suits your personal experiences. the following is a list of the journals i keep for a point of reference:
*a personal journal.
*a memories notebook in which to record random memories. because i don't record a memory with any degree of regularity, i keep a running list of memories that come to mind to later record in the memories notebook.
*a notable notebook in which to record random stuff; quotes, movie dialogue or song lyrics, ideas, questions, etc. whatever you would like to keep in a notable notebook, keep it!
*a themed journal. i keep a journal about life on my 40 acre farm/wildlife preserve.
*a daily whimsical moment notebook (which we discuss from time to time on miscellaneous monday). keep a simple record of a daily moment that truly grabbed you. reading through this daily bit of life's moments gives one a huge boost.
*art journals. art journaling is a form of art that allows the artist to create through multi-media, incorporating personal thoughts, experiences, photographs, etc. it's an artistic outlet one needs no artistic inclination/talent to enjoy. (an internet search of art journaling will give an excellent overview, should there be curious readers who wish to know more.)
do you keep a journal unique to this list? if you have a process you employ, please share! i am ever interested in different avenues of expression in the form of journaling.

in january we gathered a container (bucket, box, bin) in which to place items that would mark events, occasions and interesting happenings during 2019. we are now midpoint in 2019. are you placing items in your container? if so, good for you! if you haven't been keeping a special items container now is the perfect day to begin. the container needn't be anything fancy or decorated; just something that will hold your items securely in one place. what manner of items should you collect? whatever is important to you. examples might include invitations, ticket stubs, programs, photographs, items specific only to your experiences like a candle from a cake or a magnet or anything! at the end of the year, new year's eve or new year's day, we will look at the items placed in our contemporary time capsules and enjoy remembering experiences of 2019.
